I get my shavings from a timberframer, or sawmill. They only use spruce and birch up here. .

free if you bag it yourself, costs money if you get it bagged. $5 for a big black trash bag full.

I asked at the mill where i buy my lumber but they grind all excess scraps etc up and send it to paper mills. I will have to contact other places. I need sawdust for the garden too.

Check with any custom woodworking places as well. Anywhere that uses a laythe will have fine shavings/sawdust for cheap or free. The one near me has a lot of horse people come get the sawdust, so they even tarp the sawdust pile when they are working with walnut to keep it out of the rest of the pile. Walnut shavings can actually kill a horse if they stand on them too long...

Hi everyone !!!
Well, summer is "officially" over up here. Drove to town yesterday (that is a real town, not the 2 bars and a gas station ones that are common up here) and the colors on the trees were definitely starting to pop. Last night we had our first hard frost as the northern lights were putting a little color in the night sky. This morning the pup and I began cleaning out the kitchen garden, potting up a couple tender herbs, pulling all the casualties of last night's temps in the 20's and getting the bed ready to put next year's garlic crop into the ground. Then we just let the rototilling crew (aka the chickens) have at it. They do love their job!!!
Be back later but I just heard the DH go by with the tractor so I better get my old self outside to help. He is putting up my new leanto for my garden wagon and stuff after all. Such a good DH.

Fall is here too. The fireweed is going red. I cab see a pretty wide swath of it outside my window

We've been getting some really cold nights, too cheap to put the furnace on, besides needs filters. The bullet proof crab grass is fiercely hanging on, and now dandelions have covered the area that I cleared before. May the snow take them.

We met up with other son and his wife for lunch to celebrate Dads birthday... few days late them son James and I headed to walmart to buy Dad a log splitter for his birthday had to go there somehow the site had dumped my order so had to reorder pay for it have it the 15th

Log splutters are very helpful! Growing up, we borrowed my Grand Father's splitter a couple of times. Usually we split the wood with an ax. Mom and Dad had a wood stove
