The Old Folks Home

We are moving into Fall weather here finally!
I might get to cover the Air conditioners soon and turn off the sprinklers. We will see it it rains tomorrow or not. I imagined I could see vapor from my breath this morning. Almost but not quite. It was likely about 48 for a low this morning.

My mom had us (3 kids) I guess way back before they knew you need calcium especially when pregnant . So that ruined her teeth, she needed full dentures at 40. Later she found out she had osteoporosis , my dad too. Older sister and I have it. Turns out there is very little calcium in ice cream - :confused:who knew??
Calcium is very important too.

@CapricornFarm blood in ear?:thThat's not a good thing to wake up to, sending prayers that it's nothing dramatic and an easy fix. Feel better.

Making sourdough biscuits today. Slept too late to make them this morning so they will be for supper tonight.:drool

You guys are making my mouth hurt talking about bad teeth.

It's grey and gloomy here this morning. Foggy. 48 degrees. I'd be happy with a little snow to break up the monotony. Just told DH to brace himself, here comes the days upon days of not seeing sun.

Pumpkin. I grow sugar pumpkins. To process, I cut them in half or quarters, put time in a glass square casserole dish with about a half inch of water in it, cover with plastic wrap and pop em in the microwave until done. Takes a bit of time but when they come out you can scrape the meat off of the skin and put it in a colander or sieve to drain off the excess liquid. I then freeze it or use it immediately.

I was born and raised in central IL not far from where Libby's processed pumpkins that were grown and trucked in from fields in the next county. This time of the year there are semi loads of huge pie pumpkins being hauled through town in route to Morton and the factory and it wasn't unusual to have them roll off the top of the open semi. You had to be careful and not follow too close to the trucks but on occasion, one would survive the fall. My dad witnessed such an occasion and on an impulse, stopped, scooped up the 20+ pound pumpkin and brought it home.

I'll never forget helping my mom process that pumpkin. She had never done one before so it was peel, boil, strain, peel boil strain repeat.

Microwave method is a lot easier but I still have fond memories of the 'road kill' pumpkin pies we ate from that pumpkin.
My DW decided to make tamales one Christmas Break. Nothing is small so she made three types and big batches of each. Never having made them before, She was up with the daughters until 2 or 3 in the morning making them.

Has not made them since! We do have a very large tamale pot though. I could get a fairly large turkey in it for scalding. Too bad I am not allowed to have them in the City

I had my Dental cleaning last week and all is well. Eye exam the week before was good too. They did a 3-d retinal scan. What an amazing thing to see! Retina is fine with no degeneration or tears. They can tell about some heart disease with that scan too and it was clear so I am good for now!

I am not surprised though. My fancy scale does something called pulse wave measurement. It measures the amount of time it takes blood to get from the heart to the feet. Mine is in the healthy range. If it is too slow, then there is something wrong internally.

The recipe calls them biscuits but they are more like rolls.

I am so happy that you are using the starter already!

Might have to get one of those for DH (and me)

The one I have is a Nokia body cardio. Look for one on sale or as an amazon rerurn

I find when I roast them unpeeled, cut in half "face down" on foil, no added water is needed because they "steam" in their own juices. It also develops a nice caramelizing on the edges that adds wonderful flavor if you are going to eat it right away. A good roasted french heirloom sugar pie pumpkin has better flavor than squash as a side to pork or turkey IMHO. Mine are surprisingly sweet on their own when roasted.

I used to live on a farm that was a few miles (fortunately up wind) from a sour kraut factory. We were near a corner where the cabbage trucks would turn coming from the fields heading to the plant. I would sit on the porch with the kids and watch the trucks roll by. It was like watching a parade and the kids got a kick out of racing out to edge of the yard to grab the huge cabbage heads that would come flying off as the trucks took the corner so fast they barely dropped down a gear. I would store the best ones in our root cellar and the chickens and goats got a treat out of the ones that didn't "bounce" very well.

No way, no way no way would I want one of those scales. I'd rather live in ignorant bliss knowing I have a leaky mitral valve and a slower than normal heart rate due to the medicine I take. It would just be telling me that I'm in imminent dire danger get to a hospital now and well....hey, I'm really fine....for me. At least what passes or normal for me or as one doctor put it, "You're in great shape for the shape you are in!":lau

I've just got to figure out what to have with the sourdough biscuits tonight. I'm almost tempted to make chili. It feels like a good chili sort of day outside.

In Woodland, that happens with tomatoes taking the on ramp too fast on the freeway heading to the processing plant. I have never picked any up for the chickens though. They would love them!
