The Old Folks Home

When we had this house built, the package had an allowance for appliances. Husband was adamant about not wanting a dishwasher - for years, we had had a deal that I cooked, and he cleaned. Somehow over the years, that has changed . . . apparently he has a dishwasher too, now.:hmm
Newton's third law: All forces in the universe occur in equal but oppositely directed pairs.
and
The law of conservation of energy states that the total energy of an isolated system in a given frame of reference remains constant.

Therefore when the task of dishwashing came in your direction, the task of cooking should have gone in his direction.

You can't fight the laws of physics!

DD#2 likes to throw in a couple pots and pans and a giant mixing bowl, cuts down on how long it takes her to load it. Actually making efficient space for more dishes is just too much work....:th
I do that as well.... all my stuff is non stick... I wipe it out with a paper towel so really all they need is a good hot soapy rinse.

Cap I bought one of those counter top dishwashers. But I can't use it.
Our sink and faucet is to small and the connectors won't fit.
Dh does not do pluming so it is in my spare room taking up space till the cow jumps over the moon I guess. :idunno
Only needs an adapter.... just screw off the faucet areator and screw on the adapter.... your applience place should know which kind to get for you....

I just got back from hobbling my way around the grocery store. Scored a free 12 pound turkey :yesss:and found a prime rib roast for only 9.99 a pound. I know, that sounds like a LOT for meat but when you consider that the last one I bought was three years ago back in IL at a family ran butcher shop and paid 16 $ a pound for it, 10$ sounds like another Score to me.:yesss:

Then stopped at the Amish bulk store and stocked up on flour, yeast and other good stuff. I had looked on line for quilting needles and couldn't find anything cheaper than 4$ with a seller that had a good rating on Ebay. Found them for 1.49. :yesss: As popular as quilting is with the Amish ladies there would probably be a full scale revolt if they had to pay 4$ for a package of 20 #10s. LOL.

Now to get everything put away.

As for dishwashers, I told DH that when this one broke down I didn't want to replace it. It takes us about three days to fill it to a point that it's economical to run. I wash silverware by hand because the hot water that I use (we heat water for the kitchen on the wood stove and leave the instant hot water heater for the bathroom.) really helps my hands when my arthritis is bothering me.

I would not recommend penning them up together but they could free range together.
I tried to keep mine penned together and I caught one of my tom's trying to figure out how to breed one of my chicken hens. Some have lost hens to this.

yeah. Turkeys get BIG.

No I don't free range. Way too many predators on the ground and in the air. I would love to give them freedom, especially the OEGB crosses as they are such good foragers but I can't bring myself to take the risk with all the fox and coyotes around not to mention a thriving hawk population. I am considering letting my older birds out to scratch around in the evenings this summer. I told DH that with their egg production dropping off due to age they could earn their keep by eating bugs now. Even then I would have to stand guard over them with my .17 HMR scoped rifle.

same here. Of my birds free range for just a couple of hours, I will probably loose one.

Given your well known aversion to spending money (I mean really, who else waits until their breath freezes in the house to turn the heat on??), I would think that "running the dishwasher" would only entail chasing the boys to the kitchen sink!

ha! So true! But then the kids would be perpetually scrubbing and I wouldn't get any other work out if them.

I can see that. Hot is good for my hands too.

Got the second Mule load of sand into the run. Now it just needs a whole bunch of leaves.
Meanwhile, i am putting concrete blocks down for a raised bed in front of the house. I want it wide, husband wants it skinny. We never think the same. Sometimes i do believe men and women are from different planets!

ok...I posted thus someplace else...Noone was impressed. Dudes! This is a great recipe!

PROPER cornbread DRESSING is made like my great-grandmother made it. (4th generation Texas-German raised out in West Texas)
  1. Cast iron skillet, heat it in the oven, toss a stick of butter in the skillet, keep it in the oven until butter is melted, not brown.

In a bowl mix equal parts corn meal and masa flour, add baking powder, some milk, bit of salt, a couple of eggs.

Take pan out of oven, swirl the butter about to coat the pan, pour most into bowl of ingredients, keep a thick coating in pan.

Stir stuff in bowl until BARELY combined, then pour bowl stuff into cast iron skillet, pop skillet back into oven. Take out when cooked.

Many hours earlier, you had to take the good guts from your turkey (I like heart, gizzard, and neck) and put in a big pot of water with thyme, rosemary, super lots of sage, quartered onions, celery, parsley stalks (you can keep the leaves for something else ), salt and pepper. Cook on a super low simmer for hours.

Pick out the pan to cook the dressing in, toss it into the oven to heat along with a stick of butter.

When cornbread is done, take out of cast iron pan, and when cool enough crumble it into a bowl.

Add to crumbled cornbread whatever dry old (NOT moldy) bread you have about. In a pinch toast some good bread, crumble, and add. Take the stock, gently fish out the giblets and neck. Dice up meat and add to dressing bowl. Pour in some of the stock (be careful to save lots for the gravy..if you need extra liquid use butter), you can also add the totally smushy onions and celery if you dice them first they will almost disolve into the dressing. Add a few raw eggs, pour in most of the butter that melted in the casserole pan, toss it all together and then taste. Probably need to add more pepper and sage.

Moisture needs to be WET, but not dripping.

Add what you need to get it right.

Very gently spoon it into the casserole dish (do NOT squish it down), cook until done.
