The Old Folks Home

That is because of the ripped up roads?

yeah...they are harder on the roads. But up here, even town roads often have a layer of ice and snow that protects them from the studs.

Studs are stupid to use on bare roads. .. wears the studs out too fast.

Studs are great, and the best choice for ice, and snow on ice, and all of the super nasty.

Yep! My mom had studded tires. The problem here is that the snow is only in the mountains. some put studded tires on for the winter and do most of their driving down here-- ripping up the roads

yeah...that is stupid. Studded tires are expensive and wear out so quickly on clean pavement.

up here they put a tax on studded tires for that reason.

If you swap them out at a garage in the fall, there is an extra tax too...every time you do it.
But no rebate when they take them off in the spring I'm sure.

The roads here are clear 95%+ of the winter, we have snow plows and they salt. Besides ripping up the roads, studs only work at higher temperatures near freezing, the colder it gets, the harder the ice gets, the less the studs can grip. I once met a friend in the evening after work, we both took the same route. There was some ice at a stop sign and I had to take it slow with my snow tires to get traction to start. She had the same problem ... with her week old studded tires 10 minutes later. Basically they are useless or worse most of the time because they increase stopping distance on wet or dry roads, only useful in "warm" ice and really well packed snow. And then there are the people who illegally leave them on well past the time they have to be off in the spring.

I wonder why our roads are so bad.

finally got back from the visit with the Oncologist.... two and a half hours....:th

UC San Diego Hospital.... Is a teaching hospital... My doc is the director of the department... He had an intern in tow.

Surgery will be done by robot.... Because of my weight they wont do a standard incision because of the risk of infection. I have had edema in my lower leggs now for a couple of years. Because of that he wont be taking the lymph nodes. He said if he removes them my legs will just get worse.

Blood pressure was really bad this time... so he wants me to get some more tests before he operates.... CT scan to get a really good look at my abdominal area... Then I have to get approval from a Cardiologist for surgery.

VEry very nice man.... Very very nice intern too...
