The Old Folks Home

Today was the feast day of Theophany (baptism of Christ). After the church service we go down to the beach and bless the bay. It was a BEAUTIFUL day today! Son #3 got to jump in the water to retrieve the cross that was thrown in. Not the potion of the sun in some of the scenery photos, it was about 12:30.

Yep, in Alaska the sun both rises and sets in the south. (I am at latitude 59)

Smelts used to be a big thing here, remember groups going up north when they were running and catching them at night with lanterns and dip nets in the creeks. Dad would bring home five gallon pails of them. I remember going up once but I was young and just watched. Easy to clean just cut of the head and run the guts out with your finger, flour and deep fry, eat bones and all. Crispy fish fries :drool
Last time I had them fresh was in the '90s at a friends house. They were frying basket after basket of them. I could be wrong but I don't think they are as plentiful anymore.

Careful now... you don't want him/her (Alaska) to get a "big head"...;)

So Al, how's a bout next year you go after that cross and show the younguns how it's really supposed to get done? :gigMake sure it's thrown waaaaaaayyyyy out there!

Used to fish for smelts in the Adroscoggin & Kennebeck Rivers, upstream, when they'd ice over. Those little fishes were delicious. head off, thumb swipe down the spine to remove guts and blood pocket. seasoned flour and flash fry. Been a lot of years...

We haven't froze to death yet. Naked neck rooster does have some frostbite now, shouldn't be a problem though. They still haven't stayed confined to the coop at -3F today. -13F and -20 to -30 windchill tonight.
I read Mt Washington New Hampshire is something like -26 with -100 windchill and tied with the second coldest place on earth right now
Going to slowly warm up here this coming week they claim a high of 44 Thursday, that's like almost a 60* difference WOW, t-shirt weather! Lol!

:lau NEVER going to happen!!! In the Gulf of Mexico, yeah maybe... but never up here. I grew up on Galveston! :gig This water might kill me on contact.

One year the priest tossed the cross like a Frisbee. .. I had never before seen a cross tossed THAT far! It was wild! Kid 3 got it that year too.

On the comb and wattles? Any spots on the neck?

Thanks y'all.

Did you know farmers that grow wheat have to spray it with round up for it to be harvested. And some Mills are refusing to take it due to the round up contaminating their other grains.
I was just reading an old article about gmo corn that was developed with a protein that would kill ear worms. Was supposed to be great because no pesticides/chemicals. The worms grew resistant ate the crops anyway. Now they spray the awesome gmo corn with pesticides. Cool.

Just the tips of the comb, wattles not yet. Necks are fine. They were all fine last yr but we didn't get this cold for this long. Weather man better be right about it warming up lol.
My fingers froze today with gloves (just those yellow cloth work gloves) on just out for ten minutes getting firewood and feeding/watering everyone. Not frostbit but dang they hurt. And those crazy chickens laughed at me lol.
