The Old Folks Home

Happy 4th of July, everyone! Eat drink and be merry!

The diet bothers me. Let me tell you why. IMHO it is a temporary fix. Yes, you will loose weight but you are not permanently changing your eating habits to keep the weight off. To do that you have to adapt and adopt a healthy diet and stick with it. If you go back to your old eating habits after adhering to the diet, you will just gain the weight back. That is why a lot of people have trouble with diets like Weight Watchers. They join, loose say, 45 pounds quit and go back to their old eating habits. 6 months or less later, they have gained back the 45 pounds plus an extra ten. Why? Bad dietary choices and the resuming of old eating habits.

It's important to adhere to the concept of lean healthy protein filled in with good carbs veggies and fruit in recommended servings sizes. Yes you have to give up a lot of your favorite foods but the trade off is improved health.

For me, reducing my serving size and sticking with healthy foods has worked wonders. Yes, I allow myself the occasional treat. Last night it was a pop sickle. But last night I told DH that it had it me that if I wanted to keep the weight off that I had lost, I had to permanently stick with my diet. No fried foods, no bad carbs, no junk food and I have to keep moving! Exercise is vital to loosing weight and keeping it off.

So basically the reason most diets fail is because they are too difficult to stick to. Folks who need to loose a lot of pounds really need to be under a doctor's supervision for weight loss and even consider a dietitians supervision as the amount of time it takes to loose 100 pounds will take months instead of days and the chance of failure is high if you are not willing to permanently change your eating habits.

Anybody can do it. It's just a matter of determination.

The only way to diet is to change your lifestyle.... One of the best lifestyle changes is using Weight watchers as a basis.

I been on them all each time I have lost ten pounds I have gained back twenty. My biggest mistake of all was to go on that first "Diet" years ago when I was twenty one.
Thats "When" the snow ball started.

Back then I was only 145 pounds. a size fourteen at most. I could wear button fly non stretch jeans.... And at 5'8' ish Not bad looking. But I fell into that Oh I dont look like so in so in a magazine. Family criticisim didnt help... "Why dont you wear your hair this way or that way... " or There is something wrong with your shirt ....

No one said good things or little praises.... Or tried to bolster my confidence.... they just didnt know how... Mom in particular....

Body image at a young age can cause anorexia or bulemia or obesity... add to that a bit of genetics and it can fall apart so quickly.

I have been examining this for a while now. a very long while... Introspeciton. Grief for time lost over failures....

The ONLY reason to change is for health reasons... and the best way is to get help from a positive source.

THE STAR-SPANLGED BANNER

During the war of 1812, the ship Francis Scott Key was on, was detained from leaving the waters near Baltimore.. Looking across the bay in the Baltimore harbor, he could see Fort McHenry in the distance.. It was September 13, 1814.. As the night fell and light waned, suddenly the smoke of cannons and the burst of bombs lit the sky..

The screams of the war's dying filled the night.. Francis Scott Key could hear the shouts of the victims and the howl of missiles piercing the air, but no sound gave a clue as to who was winning and who was losing.. Only the morning light would reveal the battle's outcome..

As darkness gave way to light, Francis Scott Key wrote on the back of an envelope..

"Oh say, can you see, by the dawn's early light, what so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, o'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming!
And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag was still there:
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave, o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?"

For the Free, by the Brave..

God Bless You All, God Bless America..
