The Old Folks Home

Talk about Google spying on us, looks like our local paper from 100 yrs ago has also, 1984 "Newspeak"for sure.

Looks like we have talked about getting rid of daylight savings time for at least a hundred yrs,

And I don't know but a 100yrs ago several thousand dollars (for chickens!) was like tons of $$ .

Chickens like that are very expensive today too!

I have to say that I've had a lot of chicken breeds in my life, but the Ayam Cemanis are fearless and acrobatic.
They fly out of the 6 foot run as soon as I open the pop door in the morning. They spend most of their days free ranging and they go pretty far. Most of the other birds I have will spend their day panic-running around the run fence trying to get back in if they manage to fly out. Yesterday I went to wash my hands at the kitchen sink and I have 4 dark eyeballs staring at me from the other side of the bay window. The two Ayams had gotten over the run fence, came up to the house, flew over the garden fence to perch on the A frame we have over the exhaust pipe (the snow will crush it coming off the roof).

I love crows. What does "garbage bird" mean? They eat garbage or they are garbage?

I love all Corvids Especially Ravens.... When you take a look at "Garbage" birds they are birds who fish in the trash for wasted bits. If you look in the wild Bears hunt salmon....

They strip the flesh off and leave the carcass to rot. and go catch another. Crows Ravens and Raptors are not adverse to picking the good bits off that carcass. Heck the Bear spent the energy to catch it.... Why not save energy and feast on whats left.

One of my favorite gifs is of a Bald Eagle Guarding a carcass and a raven trying to get some.... And for those who dont know Bald eagles are a fishing bird....

Your Ayam Cmenai sound like a nice foraging breed!

Likely both on crows but I do not see them at the dump

We have bald eagles here inland from the MIssissippi where they congregate. When the river freezes over in the winter and they can't scavenge dead fish and animals, they head to the interior and hope for better pickins. We had one roosting on an electric pole across the road from us in January and I read where there are three breeding pairs in our county alone. They won't tell anyone where the nests are, just that they are here.

Raptors in general are numerous along with crows and vultures. DH used to fly RC planes during the day before he had to avoid sunlight and it wasn't unusual for him to take a model up as high as he could and suddenly have 3-4 vultures flying with him. He would fly the RC in big loops like the vultures and they would fly along with him, probably thinking that the ugly noisey bird they were following knew where the good eats are!:gigIt's amazing how such an ugly and awkward bird on the ground can be one of the most impressive fliers in the air.

Our first 'baby' goes in to be spayed this week. Sidney is first up. Her brothers are starting to show show some very unbrotherly interest in her so it is time. She goes in on Thursday morning. I hate doing this to them. I know it's necessary and it's part of being a good dog parent and owner but like any dog mamma I tear up at the thought of my fur babies to the 'hospital' where they come home sore and with stitches.:hit

I'll be even more relieved when the boys go in to be snipped. The testosterone is surging and they spend most of their time beating up on one another. No harm done but lots of noise and screaming going on. If you think roosters working out their pecking order is stressful, you've never seen cattle dogs do the same thing.

Rainy here today. I woke up earlier to thunder rumbling so inside projects on the docket for Saturday.

You really are taking on a lot with those rescues!

We have crows and hawks fly over the house here. Buzzards are more out in the country though
