The Old Folks Home

I think that happens to all of us. I'm busy a lot so by the time I sit down to look at BYC or answer emails I have a lot to comment about. Can get pretty 'wordsy' without you meaning for it to happen.

That makes sense! I think it’s easy to wordsy ha

Also even though I’m on here a lot, I usually just reply all at once, so I can have some pretty epic multi quotes :lau :hide

Three hours working with the pups this afternoon. Basic commands like sit, come and leash walking. Finally, after working with them in the shop for 15 minutes we walk out to the coop with the pup on a leash and visit the 'chickie birds'. Three of four were content with sitting in the grass watching the birds scratch around or come up to the fence for a treat. Yes, chickens love the cat treats and pieces of turkey hot dogs I was using for training. Only one decided to take a run at the fence and I was ready, having my feet firmly planted and ready for the leash to go taunt. That was Varn. After redirecting, we tried again with success.

Ultimate goal is to turn off the hot wire, have the pup(s) on leads and take them into the run. I'm also studying training techniques for ACD's.

Like I told two of the boys today. They are tough nuts to crack but even the toughest nuts have the sweetest meat worth digging for.

I need a drink....or a vacation....or both!

You deserve kudos! One at a time is enough for me. This dog is a land shark. Bites everything. Very stubborn about it. Doesn't leave a mark, but I am trying to train her to lick instead. She bites the Shepherd on the face! I try to redirect her to bite her toys. It is slowly working with reminders.

Now that I'm retired, I tell people I'm allergic to my phone.
And the mic on the HAM??

Cause a lot of the phone time is just laying in bed at night or in the morning or sitting in a chair instead of sleeping or getting up. Like now.
I *think* we discussed this some time back. 10 PM happens and the phone gets turned OFF, not set to vibrate, not silent mode, OFF. And it stays OFF until after breakfast.

Also, I know a lot of people who have this phone addiction think they are going to miss something important if they aren't looking at it every minute or three. So when you are doing that, think "would I really care if I had not seen this?". I bet the answer would be "no" a LOT.

Yeah I definitely should not be doing that! Especially since usually it’s always at night too since I put off going off so long and go off at night or late afternoon or both.

Probably not a good idea to be driving around late at night let alone sitting in a parking lot.

I always lock the doors though and always try to sit under the lights but still. Probably pretty stupid and dangerous.

And thanks! That article was very interesting!!
That and I try to read what I wrote cause of the darn spell check...!!
Was supposed to be same thing, not something, and crap not carp lol.
Having pulleys (pullets) is a very popular one here on byc lol .

Danged straight, Bruce. About the only time I use the radio is when I participate in our club's Saturday morning net or to let DH know I'm on my way home when I'm out and about running errands. A couple of club members commented that I had a nice professional radio voice but they didn't hear me too often and I said 'you bet. I'm retired!' I do digital radio called FT8 which is fun if a bit boring where you make contacts via a computer keying the radio to send out signals and then receiving signals sent out by other operators via their computers and radio stations. No talking involved. It's just one station talking to another via their computers/radios..

@CapricornFarm all 5 of the pups are guilty of that but getting better. I haven't had that problem with other dogs like we've had with these guys. They are so 'mouth' oriented thanks to their heeler nature. I finally started reading books about training cattle dogs and they suggested redirection using treats where you put a tiny treat in your hand, put your hand in the dogs mouth and then not giving them the treat until they respond to the word 'gentle'. It works but redirection works better if we just have a handful of cat kibble handy and when they start biting and jumping, we simply toss the kibble on the floor. It's like saying 'oh I'm not easily distract.....oh look! Something shiny!' Works every time. Then when they get done vacuuming up the kibble, they come back to us and sit waiting for more. Every book I've read says that ACD's train differently from other dogs and boy do I believe that.

It's just really demeaning being outsmarted by a cattle dog.

I think you are right and I still haven’t fixed it yet.

That’s a good idea though and I think I am going to start implementing it.

Although I’m a bit of a night owl so 10 seems so early to me but I need to get used to it haha

And hmm, that’s true. I think you are right there.
