The Old Folks Home

What they are telling the public here is that cougars are moving south from Nebraska and the Dakotas in search of new territory. Thus they are young males. Back 7 or 8 years ago after a young male was shot and killed by neighborhood Amish men out on their winter predator hunt we heard stories about Amish farmers going out to do morning feeding and seeing females leading cubs walking across fields. I was under the assumption that cougars are for the most part solitary creatures. If so, that would mean that the pair our neighbor reported seeing in his pasture were possibly a breeding pair? Makes me shudder.

We have a tree in our back timber (a mature cedar) that looks as if all the bark has been shredded off of it. You can see claw marks on it also. We took pictures and sent them to the area conservation office, asking what was shredding our tree. The first time we talked to them they asked us to send them pictures. That was the last we heard from them.

I think their main goal is not to create panic in the general population. Missouri depends a lot on revenue from hunters both in state and out of state.

@ronott1 what sort of surgery did you have for your stenosis? Was it a fusion? I've been doing a lot of reading about cervical stenosis and from what I have read compression fractures are the main danger.
I have congenital spinal stenosis-- it is rare. It was micro surgery to open up the nerve channels. I crushed the sciatic nerve for my right leg. It is, amazingly, still recovering and I get just a bit better all the time but still have about 30% foot drop on the right foot.

It is lumbar so lower spine

Huh, very interesting. Thanks. So have some people seen wolves? Since I know you said presumably.

Wow that’s very interesting! Didn’t realize wolves were out there.
California gets a bad wrap! It is not all Los Angeles and Disney land. It is the place of the gold rush, continental railroad and quite some wild stuff including animals.

:lau that does seem to be all people think of when they think of California!

But I know it’s way more and California does have some pretty cool stuff! :D

And some neat history. Don’t know tons about it but have heard of those two and some other stuff. :)

I’ve always wanted to see the redwoods too and also that one highway that like goes along the coasts and on the cliffs and stuff. I think it’s route 1? Or something like that?

And wow that’s so cool they’re coming back on their own! Kind of like the sharks are here. I love when species start to recover on their own. :)

We were at some redwoods in Muir Woods National Monument a couple of weeks ago. I posted some pictures but maybe not here?

I think I saw some of those pictures but I’m not sure. You and your wife right? I think you posted them on NFC’s thread? Maybe? Or the cafe? The ones I saw were great pictures and you guys looked like you were having a good time. :) and nice to put a face to the name haha

Had you ever been to the redwoods before?

Hey, I had dinner last night with a fun BYCer as well! What a coincidence ;)

This morning's Dorian report has it hitting 145 MPH winds, travelling at 12 MPH, expected to slow, heading straight for Great Abaco and Grand Bahama islands. If it stays on the current "most likely" path it will skirt the east shore of Florida, with the eye coming in around Cape Canaveral, and hit land just north of the Georgia/South Carolina border.

Remember awhile back, hurricane Irma hit our area unusually hard. While we had power the entire time, all of our neighbors went 6 days without power. This time, we've prepped like we were going to get hit with another Irma, or worse. I spent some of my time yesterday, moving most things out of the garage, into the shed. I put a tarp across the whole garage floor, then set up all the freshly cleaned cages for my chickens.

On an amusing note, Dh has always given me a hard time about using the generator if the power goes out. It's for dire emergencies only. Yesterday morning, he was giving me his usual hard time about using the generator, if the power goes out. I looked at him, and said, "you know the dire emergency we're to save the generator for?" "Yes", he replied. I said, "well THIS IS IT." The look on his face was a Kodak moment. It's like he was saving it for a zombie apocalypse, and anything short of that was not enough of an emergency to use it. I reminded him, it's not a one use only item. It can be used over, and over. Sheesh. We had 2 full tanks, and I made him fill 3 more, so I now have 5 full tanks. I mentioned that I could get through 7 - 10 days on the 5 tanks.

He mentioned that according to his calculations, which are somewhat flawed, 3 tanks would only give me 3 days worth of power. He further mentioned that I had to be extremely conservative with it, so it would last at least 21 days, or more. Oh, and I couldn't run it at night, since the sound would carry more at night, and people would try shooting us to loot us, and take our food. "Then shoot back", was my response. He's definitely got a doomsday mentality. I reminded him it was a local disaster, not country wide. In addition, I was not staying here with 3 kids, longer than a week without power. I have several friends, and family in other states, with electricity, that I could visit for a short time, until power was fully restored here.

Considering his reaction(s), I think I understand his thinking a bit more, and we will be making a few changes soon, regarding propane. I had told him when we first moved in, that instead of so many individual tanks that are enclosed in what looks to be a shed, I wanted him to call the gas company, and have a big tank installed. I wanted a gas range too. He mentioned how the tank would have to be buried, so no one could see it, and he didn't think it would be safe. I couldn't understand what he was talking about. Now, digging into his doomsday brain, I understand a bit more. Yeah, I think we will be getting a big tank. He can rebuild the shed around it, like the one for the smaller tanks, if he's so concerned about it being seen.

The best redwoods are on the coast closer to Eureka. I have been to one place where you drive your car through a tree!
