The Old Folks Home

Thanks, cap and penny. That was pretty much our opinion also but what to do about it is the big problem. I have no problem with prayer. What is the old joke? He who has never prayed has never taken a math test? For the most part we like all the people. Some travel quite a ways to attend and it's a good group that is always willing to help one another out. But other than not attending, we see no resolution without stepping on someone's toes.

Maybe they need a suggestion box.

My mom died without ever using her china. She would always say 'I'll get it out when and only when the president comes to dinner'. So sad. It's made 4 moves with only one cup getting broken. I was able to find a replacement on Ebay and yes, once a year I get it out and use it and no, the president has yet to show up for dinner. I have no idea who I will pass it on to.

I'll try to get caught up at some point. Today was the monthly meeting of our HAM club..

Something happened there today and I'm hoping I can get y'all's opinion of if what happened would make you a bit uncomfortable. The club is public, multi county, not held in a church but in a county training center. Today the club president asked another person to lead the group in an opening prayer. I am a person of faith, safe to say that most there are.But my faith is a private thing that I choose to show in charitable acts towards others.

There is a small group in the club that is of a faith that isn't of my own choosing and this is the group that is doing this. Others have confided that they are uncomfortable by the 'opening of the meeting with a prayer'. It might be considered a nice touch but what if not everyone is Christian? What if there is a Hebrew there? Is there a time and place for such things? People have told me that they wish they wouldn't do that and that in deed, there is a time and place, like the beginning of a meal, etc for prayer but not at the beginning of a public meeting.

What do you think?

As long as all religions present are not for killing each other....

I see no issue. I rather think it is nice to know that they believe something. :idunno

I have been to several different gathering type things where someone prays to start things off...and it has never been someone who is a member of the religion that I am a member of... .... but it hasn't ever bothered me... I pray quietly in my own way until they are done, and rather hope that those of various faiths will do the same...

It is good to take a moment to pause and think things through...get your mind and thoughts in order...before starting a joint activity. :idunno

I agree with you... but how to broach the subject without hurting feelings....
its not like you could ask for a raise of hands......

Wouldn't bother me.
A lot of people think such stuff should not be in a public setting because of the whole "separation of church and state" but.. The separation in our founding was for a couple things, one because of our diversity of religions and two to protect us from the state/government, government should have no say in our faith. The separation never has been about keeping it out of a public setting.

Depends on whether they expect everyone to join in or it's optional. I am an atheist but I don't mind displays of religion provided I have a choice to participate or not. Before a lot of formal events at work the chaplain prays. I bow my head out of respect but do not have to join in. This seems a little different but if you can not join in without consequences I think it is fine. If there's consequences for not joining in then it needs to stop.

We all need to respect what each other believes but I will stand my ground their religion
should not be pushed another I believe very strongly as a American in the right of religion and freedom with that I will say goodnight very long day tomorrow will be the same
