As for pea coats we had a patient who gifted me a navy pea coat. He had 'outgrown it' girth wise and none of his daughters could wear it so he gave it to me. Man is that thing warm.
Actually cooking three meals a day on a wood stove isn't all that hard. Did it here for 4 years and got quite good at it. You can cook the best slow roasted roasts on top of the stove that you have ever tasted. Neighbor still has theirs and it has an adjustable heat oven to it. They use it all the time in the winter.
As for sticker shock....yeah....I'm old. I remember mom sending me to the grocery store with 50 cents for a gallon of milk and loaf of bread. I could keep the change. I still remember getting 7 cents to call my own. Big money when you are 10 years old....and it's 1963.
