The Old Folks Home

perchie, please see a doctor if this keeps happening. I know it's hard to manage glucose. My brother has been diabetic since college, he is 69. He wears an insulin pump(I think they call it) tests his blood sugar many times a day. Always carries glucose tabs with him in case the readings get too low.

If I am not mistaken 911 should still be a land line or a hardened line because of the implications if it goes out.

The addresses are likely fine. The change to pbx happens at the service box for the neighborhood.

I would not count on 911 being non digital anymore. Most Cities are upgrading to a newer system currently

@perchie.girl, glad to hear that you are feeling better.
We always used cheese sandwiches or peanut butter sandwiches for low blood sugars. You are right on with the protein as it stabilizes low blood sugars. In extreme cases we would use orange juice laced with sugar followed by the sandwich.

Between Christmas cooking, making out a few cards (do you still send out cards?) working with the 5 heathens and doing everyday stuff, I've been studying for my last HAM upgrade. It's hard. Lots of math. Not just adding and subtracting, but Trig.....ummmmm just can't wrap my old brain around that so DH is coaching me through the tough parts.

We got almost 5 inches of snow yesterday. Very pretty and it finally makes it look like Christmas. It won't last long as temps are expected in the low 40s later this week but I'm going to enjoy it while it's here.

@drumstick diva Your honorary 'nephew' Varn is back to his 'onery self. This morning he tried to drag two heating pads and 3 magazines under the futon which we have christened the "brat cave" I had a rousing tug of war with him over a heating pad which can now no longer be used with any wet pack.....

He's such a good boy......not.

when I was in college i was asked to tutor Trig... It is basic to waveform in many fields From Electronics to Physics.... dont remember much now... Your DH is probably more up on it...

I do cards but after christmas... too hectic. Except for family which will include gifts.

Which I bought today... Gift cars and candy and doggy bones....

and splurged on a prime Rib for Xmas dinner. They are much easier than the pork roast I wanted to do... I am not only feeling better my balance is better and I am not freezing all the time.

Now I am being a good girl and eating... Poached eggsies on sourdough toast and One Breakfast sausage...

Made veggie trays for both of us for dinner. Each tray had a monster Avocado half on it.... those beauties were two for five I bought four.... I may have to freeze some All are dead ripe... and I have Vitimine c powder as well as lemon and Lime juice... and straight on vinegar...

Oh and later on tonight I am going to make a big batch of pickled Veggies. Onion fennel Cucumber, mini bell peppers, Garlic, and what ever I can Glean out of the refrigerator. Though I may do the bells separate... Even the minis are just as strong flavored as regulars maybe even stronger.

All can be used on sandwiches, Stir fry, Steam saute... but the vinegar extends the shelf life.

pleas excuse the randomness of this post...

I bought some kombucha to give it a try... Had to do a 50/50 mix with plain water to be able to drink it. I enjoyed the taste even if it wasn't sweetened. I cant read the bottle but I think it was lemon/ginger... I can put in some sweetener next time...

Also got green goddess smoothie in a half gallon jug and another called blueberry something or other... I probably will only be able to drink a shot glass of it at a time. But knowing my son he will Mainline it and it will be gone in two weeks.

I have protein powder I can blend up for a shake... unflavored so I can put any fruit I want in it for a meal. I also have chicken soup flavored powder, That has to be mixed cold then heated up... I can add a few chopped mushrooms and or some Garlic and black pepper to make it taste awesome.

Oh and I forgot Fresh veggie plate.... I used fresh asparagus.... Oh yummy... Pickling the lefovers... I have a thirteen cup plastic container that Is slated for pickling job...

Appetite is back energy is back ... Fingers crossed that I don't gain weight.

Morning Old Folks BF learned he was diabetic when he was like 28 home from Vietnam
he lost 80 lbs but still needs insulin even today 35 years later he is stable but keep meals regular and peanut butter at ready
I have a cousin that came back from desert storm. He was 25 and found out he was diabetic and put on insulin.... He was part of the Seal Support team and he either parachuted with them or jumped down on Zip lines. When he came back he was 220 lbs of nothing but muscle.... Carrying Electonics and support gear meant his pack was more than a hundred pounds. One day his gear failed him and he came down full on his feet. Broke both legs but he was able to slow down a bit. or he would have died.

They discharged him and patched him up in the VA thats when they found the diabetes... Now hes a whopping 90 pounds and is being treated for pain from fibromyalgia ... Heart condition .... you name it.

The VA insists he come in for a recheck when ever he has to have his prescriptions... Which means driving 300 miles one way... He has to take morphine to do it. They finally okayed him to see a local doc to get his prescriptions filled...

His family is there around him he cant move closer to the docs. Been married two or three times... He has one grown son that lives with him along with his grandson... I think watching that youngster grow up is what is keeping him alive.
