The Old Folks Home

And ALL the copper heat pipes in the Shelburne Farms (Electra Havemeyer Webb, look her up) were removed and donated.
and @Perris

The house I lived in in Texas had been built towards the end of WW2, so things were still rationed. As a result the septic pipes were not built of metal, but of tar paper.

I guess it wasn't too bad of a choice, lasted a good number of years.

My dad and grandparents would tell me stories of the rationing and air raid drills.

My dad couldn't get new shoes, since leather was rationed, but his feet had grown too much for the one pair he had. His parents had to get him new shoes on the sly, after hours, all lights off, sneaky through the back door at the shoe store, and only because the owner owed my grandfather a favor.

My dad also said how exciting it was to visit the relatives in the country, because they had BUTTER, all you could eat butter!!

When my dad was little he and his parents (my grandparents) lived in New Orleans, and my grandfather was the air raid captain that had to help with the drills and get everyone to the shelters.

His job though was to train doctors as fast as he could, so they could send them off to help the soldiers.

Ah, good old Orangeburg pipe, it was originally used as conduit. It stopped being used in the 70's. There is some of that between my house and the septic tank. Not sure how much but a 3-4' section right at the tank was replaced with PVC a couple of years ago because it broke. Had to dig through a couple of inches of frozen ground in December. I would have to pull 2 decks down to dig out the pipe.

good news

Back from the trip to the house. No broken anything No stolen anythng well except the shotgun. I am hoping my neighbor has it under his protection.

So outside of a deep clean I can start moving stuff over. Everythihng I will bring up will be in plastic totes. There is evidence of a rat infestation. But I figured that would happen after the cats left.

Got a lot of pictures. Am heading up there tomorrow to show the handy man around. There is one broken window that I want boarded up but that was broken when I bought the house.

my gut feeling initally was Rita was commenting on how messy the house was. initally. Was right. this time she told it with more embellishment. SMH.

I will report the shotgun to the sheriff. Bout all I need to do.
