The Old Folks Home

bruce, when we got sick with the regular flu, none of the adults felt good enough to wash dishes. Heck, it was all we could do to fix something to eat. It was nice being able to toss everything in the outside garbage, and not have to worry about washing, and putting up the dishes. It also helped minimize re-exposure.

@bruceha2000, it's not a lot of yeast when you make your own bread and hamburger buns. My bread recipe for Amish Sweet Bread takes 1.5 tablespoons of yeast and the hamburger bun recipe takes 2 tablespoons. If I make sourdough or machine bread it takes less but I make sourdough as a treat and machine bread if I'm not feeling well or it's too hot for the oven to be on.

Trust me, using that much yeast per recipe makes the container go down real fast.

As for freezing the flour. I've found worms in boxes of Jiffy mix if I keep them around too long or don't freeze them. Not so much in store bought flour although it has happened. If I bring any flour or flour products in from bulk stores I definitely freeze it as I've found worms in them if I don't. Those little buggers spread like...well like the coronavirus is in the big cities.

If you aren't fining them in your flour products you should consider yourself lucky. Maybe it's a regional thing?
I use a pound of yeast in about 6 months. We do not buy baked goods from the store

I spoke too soon. As I was pulling into our local Bistro for the Wednesday Coffee Ladies, the news came over the radio that New Mexico has 3 presumptive positive cases: A couple in their 60's that just got back from Egypt and a woman in her 70's that just returned from New York. They have self-quarantined.

Our governor gave an 11:00 conference -- which I missed -- that, no doubt, will be repeated later on the local news. Still not a panic (well, at least not here) and carrying on as usual with the addition of copious handwashing.

Doesn't it get a bit "stale" in 6 months? I buy the jar and keep it in the refrigerator. Admittedly I've not hit it hard baking. Use it for pizza dough. The bread I've made is sourdough so no yeast needed.
I keep the yeast in a tupper ware container in the Fridge. It lasts a long time like that.

Afternoon all lot's of the covid19 here but 150 miles North of us
none down our local way .. We are not panicked by any stretch
Practice the same as for any other flue wash hands do not touch door handles
Such like that
Yea, I've never been one to panic either. Of course I'm going to use precautions, washing hands and such. I just heard that 150 children died from regular influenza just in January but you didn't hear much about that on the airwaves. So I don't know.
