Yeah it definitely seems like a waste. I hope they use them but idk if they can when they’re gassed? The folks it happened to where pretty disappointed for sure..
They could not understand the senseless killing of them, then to not let them have to bodies was insult to injury
I know they’re not pets but it’s still senseless and sad. They could have been made into pet food or something instead of just gassing them all. And they also gave the farmers basically no warning. Just called the night before and showed up the next morning. That’s the farmers livelihood too and they had a contract until at least the fall. I get that it’s expensive to feed them and it’s unusual circumstances and all that, everybody’s trying to do their best or whatever, but it’s still pretty shitty to just show up and gas 60 thousand plus birds with no warning and not even use the bodies. Livestock or not. And just because they’re livestock doesn’t mean we can’t be sad about the loss of life, even if they were being utilized. I had to put a cockerel down recently and even though I knew it had to be done (he was sick), it was still sad. It’s a living thingThey still have to feed the birds and if they have no outlets to sell their products with everything shut down, what are they going to do? Their business is not a hobby and their birds are not pets but livestock.
The one I use is like that (but a trashcan with 5 ports)@penny1960 I've tried that kind of feeder and the little delinquents will dig the feed out of it. I've watched them scoop with their beaks and scratch over the holes with their feet and out comes the pellets. The feeder I'm using right now is similar to this one:

We shall see how it is received.
I use those kind as well but with shorter body. Each can hold 25 lbs of feed. The space between the short pan and the tall wall is pretty small so they cant get in there to do anything but eat.I use hanging feeders. I do have a couple that have higher sides on the pans. Most of the birds I don't have any problem with but there are some that if they can they will spill out the feed and I use pellets. With the higher sided pans I haven't had the problem. In the first picture one on the far side of the coop is a feeder with the higher sided pan. Another one like in in the lower picture only a little taller.View attachment 2126887View attachment 2126888
