The Old Folks Home

microchick, I have at least one daughter I'll let you adopt. She's grown, so you won't have to worry about dirty diapers, or potty training. She can feed and dress herself. She is gainfully employed. The only downside is that she will bring home chickens, ducks, etc. She even brought home a newborn squirrel once. We had that thing for years.

Are you sure she REALLY isn't mine and we were just separated at birth? Sounds very much like me in my younger years, heck, I was co-conspirator last year when we dragged home 5 puppies. I hate to tell you this, but she is never going to grow out of it! And thank God for it! She has a kind heart!

And then there were 21. Zorra died this morning, she was a month shy of 8 years. She's been off by herself during the day the last few weeks and not interested in morning BOSS or evening scratch so I knew she was fading. Last night she was in the closed nest box instead of up on the roost, same thing Yue (same 2012 batch of chicks) did last fall so I figured she would similarly live only a couple more weeks.

But this morning she had (I assume) a heart attack right outside the barn when I was tossing out BOSS and feed. Fell over right in front of me, I picked her up and she died almost immediately. Frankly I'd rather that than to find her just dead somewhere, I know she didn't suffer.

Zorra would go broody a few times a year and raised many of the remaining 21 girls.

This is her last June

RIP Zorra!

8 years is a good run for a hen

I sort of figured when she hit 30, and had not outgrown it yet, she never would. Yes, she has a compassionate heart. I'll be glad when she is able to get her own place in the country, and move out of the apartment. She will then have room to be compassionate on her own property.

And I wish there were stray animals to adopt here :hit there just aren’t. :hit I’d love to just be able to rescue or take in baby ducks or puppies or dogs or kitties or whatever. One day lol
We had two cats dumped here, one died down by the river and one showed up on our porch. Crazy Cat was making weird noises. When hubby went over by the door, cat ran off.
