The Old Folks Home

Well, all 3 of Cookie's remaining eggs hatched with 3 healthy little cherub faced bantam chicks happily peeping out from under mom.

Betty Jo's first hatch was a near disaster and still isn't out of the woods. I was outside working on the last brooder pen and something told me to check on the baby. Silly little thing had completely zipped, tore loose from the bottom half of the egg, severing the cord and a small amount of unabsorbed yolk sack. It was breathing and moving but the upper half of the shell was drying to it's head and shoulders and it couldn't get free. I got it out from under mom and peeled off the remainder of the egg. Little thing is worn out but hanging in there. I saw mom peck at the yolk sack so I moved the baby farther under her. Checked before I came in and baby is still weak-ish but moving and protesting when mom parked a foot on it's little neck. The second egg has hatched without problems and mom is happily cluck cluck clucking to it and the remaining eggs.

I may have to decide whether or not to pull the first chick and put it in the incubator so it can dry out and safely absorb the rest of the yolk sack (and praying that mom didn't rupture it when she pecked at it:fl

What do you guys think? This is my first partial unabsorbed yolk sack on a chick.
Putting the chick into a brooder is what most do in this situation.

Yeah, take it in.

Thanks, @ronott1, @penny1960 and @CapricornFarm. I have the Brinsea warming up now. Will fetch it in shortly.

What's wrong with Mini's eye, Cap?
She has an area that looks like there's a growth or something. First it just looked irritated, so allergy eye drops. Then used terramycin for a month twice a day. No improvement. I give up, time to see the vet. Need to get her spayed too. And I think she might have Lyme disease. Seems grumpy and tired, not like her. We ordered Seresto collars for both dogs. Hope they help. I have been pulling ticks off both of them up to 3x a day!

We saw ticks here all winter, whenever there was s snow melt. They have been terrible all spring. I was sitting in the grass working on the grow out pen and found 2 crawling on me.

We use Sentry Plus on our dogs. Hope nothing too serious on Mini. Always scary when it's the eyes. Buck has a tiny mole on the lower left eye lid. Every time I see it my first reaction is that it's a tick but nope. Never grows thank goodness.

Got the little chick in the brinsea. She'd drying out. Still very tired but alert.

I usually do hands off once I know that the eggs are pipping/zipping. Betty Jo was acting really nervous though, standing up, sitting down, looking under her, gently pecking at the chick. I think she knew it was weak and was anxious. She seemed a lot calmer when I fetched the chick in and dealing well with the second chick under her.

Keep us posted on how the chick does
