The Old Folks Home

My bantam mamma took her babies out side for the first time today in the prefab coop. So freaking cute to watch her scratching in the chips and dirt and them excitedly following her around. She is such a fiercely protective little mom.

I'm hoping to get Betty Jo and her chicks out of the main coop tomorrow. We are moving the renovated chicken tractor into the run today.

Had to remove more roosters from the main coop and into the bachelor coop. They are happily beating one another up. I told them to have at it and save me the butchering time. Sometimes I question my own sanity when it comes to loving roosters. I have some really sweet boys who are good to the hens, respectful and friendly towards me and fun to have around and then there are the roosters in the bachelor pen...:rant:he I have one that is in there just because he wants to be in there but for the most part, the others are expendable either due to fighting, rough breeding or bad attitudes towards me. Come fall they are out of here one way or another.

@CapricornFarm, you amaze me!:bow I know you have health challenges that you are dealing with but you never give up. How do you do it?
It sounds like a nice outing!

I just sleep when I need to and do what I can. Going back to attending swaps is going to be hard. All the lifting....

I wanna put something in the woods and don’t want it to get wet or damaged or anything like that.

This is it.
OK, one has to wonder why you want to hide that in the woods for a few weeks.

Sounds like you have it down pat: Happy wife, happy life!
And conversely, Unhappy wife, unhappy life! As he found out.

Score on the fertile eggs! I have one left from my last hatch several years ago and she is still laying 5 eggs a week currently!
I guess it makes sense that eggs sold in grocery stores would be from breeds that lay really well. Egg factories aren't in the business of raising interesting or diverse hens. Do you know what yours were?

The ones from Trader Joes are Hy-line whites. Mine looks nearly identical to this one:

Long story 😂🤣

I'm still trying to get pictures of my babies. They move so danged fast that all I'm getting are blurs.

Saw one of them trying to learn how to scratch in the dirt like Mama does. It reminded me of a 9 year old boy trying to learn how to dance.

Today I wiggled my finger in front of the little bantam chicks. One of the three stood up on his toes and gave me the alarm trill....like I said.....'him'. 4 days old today. Hopefully it's one cockerel and 2 pullets in that bunch.

I haven't had a chance to do anything with the Fayoumi chicks and barn yard mix. Tomorrow they get moved out to the chicken tractor brooder.

A friend sent me pictures of the 'hatchery mistake' buff bantam silkies and the replacement bantam buff Os they sent him in correcting his mistake. Those silkies are so bleepin cute. He's looking to rehome some of them and I think he's tempting me. Right now I have one hen in a broody buster pen, two moms with new chicks and a bachelor pen full of annoying extra roosters. Told somebody If they wanted one I'd throw some scratch in a cardboard box, toss a rooster in, seal it up, poke some holes in it and mail it to them along with a 20 dollar bill. Not really but the last thing I need is a few silkie hens with broody switches stuck in the 'on' postition.

You can get way to many chickens with silkies!

I took the nest box away from my 2 silkies. They would not quit sitting.

Yeah, that's what I told him. Let one see more than one egg in a nest and bango! Broody silkie.

I finally got my last broody in the broody buster cage. She is not happy. Ask me if I care.......

Meanwhile in the bachelor pen, the bachelors are plotting to take over the farm and set up a human free zone......I gotta stop telling them what's happening in the news......They are getting ideas.
