The Old Folks Home

Well, DH is sprinting to the city then sprinting with Sid to Columbia and MIZZOU and their veterinary college of medicine emergency surgery/medicine hospital.

I find it totally amazing that they have an emergency room/hospital for animals of all sizes down there plus we have been told the best veterinary surgeons and doctors in the area. She is in good hands. Mom's a wreck, Dad is worried and we are both exhausted. But at least she is getting the best care we can find for her and that is all that matters to us.

Well, finally got my results back from the dexa scan.. according to the WHO, I'm falling apart and need immediate treatment if not sooner. My NP is suggesting Prolia. I saw what happened to dad and his mother on Fosamax. Grandma was bent over and looked pretty much like a pretzel, and dad had to have both hips replaced, which made his back that much worse. I think I'll just keep going. Thinning of bones is a natural occurrence with age. What makes it worse is flouride.. fluoride here, fluoride there. They don't stick it in our drinking water, and I don't use fluoridated toothpaste so I'm not bathing in it or drinking it.. but what other chemicals show up in the water they don't tell you about?

Took the 4 weekers out to the turn-out pen that was free... Golly, they thought they were popcorn.. hopping up in the air, running and taking flight lessons. Then they ran all over me, since I was sitting on the ground in the pen. I just love it when a plan comes together.

Prolia.....I take it, C. Ask me if I like it? Hell no. Bluntly. I will say this, prepare for side effects if they do talk you into it. Very few do not have them. My dexa scan three years ago was crapola also. moderate damage in my left hip and lower spine. Said my whole body was more than likely like that. Doctor said I was basically a fracture waiting to happen. Tried Fosamax but my stomach told me I had to be kidding. That is when I went on the Prolia band wagon.

Personally, I guess it's better than the alternative but even with my medicare it's 400$ out of pocket every 6 months. The side effects hit me pretty fast. Fatigue. Can't keep my eyes open for about a week then it slowly gets better. I sleep just about every afternoon the first week. After that, I will get periodic fatigue spells and fall asleep on the sofa watching tv. I also had some pretty severe bouts of joint pain. Always focal for me. Never more than one joint at a time but it brings tears to my eyes. Ice packs and RX pain killers on board help. Minor, constipation, hair thinning. You HAVE to take citrical 1200 mg and vit d3 every day to prevent calcium loss in your blood. Prolia is a chemotherapy biologic that blocks the bone killing cells and draws calcium out of your blood to rebuild bone.

My best advice is to go on line and read all you can about it good and bad. Personally I don't have much choice and have stopped begging the doctor to find something else for me to take. The last time I asked him he said, are the side effects bad enough to send you to the ER or bad enough that they are making your life miserable. I had to admit it was the latter and he countered by telling me that the discomfort comes and goes but the side effects from a broken him will be a life changer that I will not like.

No arguing that so I shut up. Just go into it with your eyes wide open and better educated then they are. And if you aren't taking a calcium replacer and vitamin D3, you should be. Don't want to hear that something has happened to you. You keep me smiling here on the HOME.

Sid Report. DH just emailed me. They made it safe and sound to the Veterinary Center at MIZZOU and Sid is in their hands. They wouldn't let him go in with them. He said all humans have to wait in the parking lot. Dear Lord, is all I can say. Poor baby. She is used to DH and myself along with her brothers, sisters and housemates. This is more excitement than she has had in her whole life.

Here's the simple truth about dexa scans.

I think I've read that before. Problem is that I've had small bone fractures over the past 10 years, ribs, toes, finger tip. I guess that is why they consider me high risk and insisted that I go on something. I hate it. But we just had a friend's wife pass away who was suffering from inoperable lung cancer but doing okay, came home from grocery shopping, tripped on the doorstop and fell breaking her hip. She died 5 months later from the cancer but the broken hip/surgery put her in a walker for the rest of her life.

My doctor knows me and my life style. He keeps reminding me how miserable I would be with my wings clipped.

BOOGERS!! I was out filming the 4 week old I just turned out into the turn out pen this morning, and I hear a big commotion coming from another pen.. So, I walk over there to see Snowflake on the ground under the nesting box, with a snake wrapped around her. Damned rat snake.. could have helped out with all the mice I had to trap that were getting into everything. I grabbed the snake by the tail and he turned loose of Snowflake.. she shook herself off and hopped back up on the nest (she's so dedicated to that clutch of eggs)... I took the 5 footer out, and decapitated the sum-a- bish.

And the kids playing like kids.

OMG you are SO lucky that you were there. That booger would have killed Snowflake if you hadn't been there. Glad to hear that you took care of the problem. I'm a firm believer that as long as snakes stay away from the coop and the house they are welcome to stay. And if our dogs or selves encounter a non venomous snake and the snake gets out of our way, it's free to go but challenge and it's a belt or worse.

Morning Old folks I am so glad I live in place with just gartner snakes.
Second cup of coffee dirt and seeds are the agenda ..
will take photos of the crew in banty coop.
My silkie the two I have left are gold in my odd way I love them. They co brood Mud is so small, Dirt helps she is a bit larger.

My silver grey Dorkings have five toes. Any chance of one in their background?
Dorkings are in a lot of breeds so five toes can pop up in many breeds or mixed breeds.

Base Breeds like dorkings work like that. Do you love your Dorkings?
