He got away with the variance, claiming that a small portion of the building would be used as a mother-in-law suite in the near future. That helped his cause. We won't go into any "honesty" aspects of it.

They also let him know that if he tried to build the house without pulling permits, there would be no more forgiveness, and variances. He'd better do it by the book.

In other words he got away with glaring, flagrant violation of the zoning laws.

I don't know about there but HERE he would have to have gotten a permit to build a MIL apartment. Perhaps they are granting that post build as well.

bruce, you are correct. He got away with flagrant violations of the zoning laws, with a small fine (slap on the wrist). They'll get even when he builds the house. They have their ways.
