The Old Folks Home

The kids' swing/play set has deteriorated enough that it's not safe, and a good bit of it needs replacing. Dh ordered the lumber, and hardware, then began his project. Yesterday, he decided he needed a 4 x 4 x 6, and some other hardware. He ordered it online. They finally sent the notice that his order was ready to be picked up.

I had to go to town anyway, so I offered to pick up his order at Lowes, while I was out, and about. I got to Lowes, and the order was not exactly ready. He ordered 25 of a certain type of nuts, but they only had 12 in stock. He ordered 12 of a certain size washer, but they only had 8, etc. I'm standing at the counter, and they're scrambling to finish filling the order, and correct the charges. In the meantime, they bring this piece of wood, and stand it behind the counter.

This piece of wood, was the worst looking wood, I've EVER seen in my life. The first thing that caught my attention was the color. This wood was black. It was covered in mildew/mold. It had several deep splits in it. I figured they had brought it up, so it could be processed out, and discarded. I figured wrong. THAT was the piece of wood they were going to use to fill our order. NO WAY. I told the gal behind the counter I would not accept it. Even she agreed that it was unacceptable. After they finally got the hardware together, I had to drive around to the other side of the store to pick, and have them load my wood.

They didn't have anymore 4 x 4 x 6's. They had a few 4 x 4 x 8's, which were in somewhat better shape, however, they too were pretty shoddy. I picked one that looked very good, except for about a foot on one end. No big deal, since Dh would have to cut it anyway, and he could cut off the bad end. I was not looking for, nor expecting furniture quality wood, but most of what they had was pathetic, and not even suitable for a swing set. They're charging the same for this garbage wood, as if it were decent wood. That's not good.

I ordered lumber to build a coop with and had it delivered. Big mistake. I got 2xx16's with bark on one side. I didn't need something artistic. Some of the others could have been used for Robin Hood's bow. I select my own now and anything over 10' I buy from another vendor. Just because we are in the Old Folks category now doesn't mean we are stupid.

Did I ever oversleep. I was up but made the mistake of lying back down until me wife was awake as she keeps a base walkietalkie while I carry a mobile when I'm out alone. Well all is well that ends well. all the feathered kids have been fed and watered except a pen of 4 that have water and ma is scrambling some eggs for then now. We did a fertility check on an egg I brought in out of the Bresse coop and it is fertile so I start saving them this Tuesday and will set some next Monday Night.

I thought they just stuck that wood on orders for women. Which is why i pick my own wood.

Our high today it 100° and the radar is showing rain moving in on us in about an hour. Heavy rain so maybe we will get a shower. I sure need a shower after making rounds this afternoon. Came in with not a dry stitch on and then saw that temp.
They say we broke the record of 106 yesterday by two degrees. Hard to believe that Abilene's hottest temperature ever on record is 111. I can remember being in Dallas in 1980, temps ran 113 or so for a week or ten days, maybe more. I was running up and down Stemmons freeway in an old Pontiac Bonneville with no a/c. Two windows down, sixty mph. Hot hot hot.
