The Old Folks Home

Afternoon ladies and gents of the senior persuasion.

Hope everyone survived Thanksgiving with the acceptable amount of overeating and moaning afterwards.

It's been unreasonably cold here also. Several mornings back the low as 11° when I got up and it had the bad taste to actually snow 3+ inches. The cold spell finally broke today and the birds were able to get outside.

We harvested close to 16 cords of firewood this year. All of it hardwood, oak and hickory. In the early fall we go out and clear out the deadfall where we want to cut trails to walk and ride our dirt bikes and burn it in the fall. It's pretty bad firewood but puts out enough BTUs that it warms the house without overheating it. Trust me, when the low temp is 11 I want that wood stove cranking on oak or hickory.

I segued from Thanksgiving into making Christmas cookies to stick in the freezer where they can be less of a temptation. Am I sampling one? Well...ya, of course. Gotta make sure they are fit to eat, lol.

Stay warm everyone! Or cool for all of you that have the good sense to live somewhere where winter means high temps are in the frigid 50s.
I make cookie rounds and freeze them. When we want cookies, I bake tow each. That way we will not binge on a baked batch!

Of course some in the house will eat the frozen cookie dough.....

I hear ya, Ron. I'm bad with Tollhouse cookie dough.

I'll probably wind up having to do two batches of cookies given that I want to give a box of munchies to each of our service people who deliver mail and packages to us.
My husband is a big fan of oatmeal raisin and sugar cookies. I told him he could only have ones that were broken. He kept coming out to check for rejects and when there were none he pointed out that a 'snowflake' had a bit of a bend to it.

Yeah I'm a softy. He got the defect.

Doing gingerbread for the first time this year.

Back when I and my two sons were cutting and splitting by hand firewood one evening when we came in after making a delivery to one of the really nice elderly ladies my oldest son went to his mom and said, "Mom, Dad sure has a way with the old ladies." Makes me wonder if he still thinks that now.

I have not made gingerbread in a long time!

I made butter toffee pecans a couple of weeks ago. I am getting requests to make more.

I usually make Candy at Christmas time. I just bought an Irish cream flavoring to make Irish cream English Toffee.

Pull out this year's seed catalogs. When she says it's not time for that yet, look sad and say you need something to distract you from them. :drool
She'll just tell me to go through the seed box we have without a concern for the variety and how well it grows here. A tomato is a tomato is a tomato. No understanding of VF 1 & 2 or N for nematodes.
