My mother-in-law has redeemed herself with me, just a tiny hair.
Yesterday morning, Dh leaned back pretty far in his desk chair. The legs collapsed, and he fell backwards, hitting the upper part of his body on the wall behind the chair, but the impact caused the chair to move forward some, and lay flat on the floor. There was Dh, back of the chair on the floor, him in the chair flailing like an upside down turtle. The back of the arms kept the chair from turning over, so he was trapped. It was hilarious. He did hit his shoulders, and head on the wall, so laughter would not have been appropriate at the time, but it sure was hard to keep from laughing, as we watch his arms, and legs flailing about, trying to get out of the chair.
We helped him up, and inspected the chair. When he leaned back, he put all his weight on two of the bottom support arms, with the rollers, and they broke off. He was totally upset about the fall, but he was even more upset because his desk chair was broken. I had stepped outside, and he began bringing pieces of his chair out to the garbage. In passing, he claimed I gave him the chair so it would kill him. He began telling everyone that, repeatedly. Yes, I had tried to kill him.
I reminded him that he had gained quite a bit of weight, and it was his own fat a$$, leaning too far back, that caused it. Nope, that didn't stop him from saying I had tried to kill him. Finally I'd had enough. I looked him square in the eye, and let him know that if I really wanted to kill him, I could have easily found a quicker, and surer way to do it, than wait 14 years for a chair to break.
He was talking to his mother, and telling her I tried to kill him. She informed him that I was off the hook. I didn't give him that desk chair. Several years ago, when his uncle died, he got his uncle's desk, and desk chair. The chair that broke was the one he got from his uncle. It was his uncle that tried to kill him, posthumously. Talk about a last laugh!
Sooooo, because my mother-in-law remembered that, and told him I was off the hook for trying to kill him, she has redeemed herself ever so slightly with me.
