The Old Folks Home

There are multiple reasons that barns and such used to be part of the house!
I sure a lot of kids got to go to the barn and sleep with a calf, kid, or lamb. We really wanted to build a Barndominium but to many stairs to deal with as cost was too. We did find a place with an added on Sun Room for starting plants and brooding chicks that we can get to without going outside. It has it's on separate heating and cooling system that makes it nice. It also serves as a clinic for treating needy feathered kids.

It added an extra level of protection against harsh winters. One wall of the house didn't have to be heated. The heat of the animals also created an additional source of heat.

They could take care of the livestock without leaving the house. Did you ever wonder about the origin of 2nd story doors that don't go anywhere? According to a tour guide in Germany, that was for leaving the house when the snow was 15 feet deep.

There are houses like that at lake Tahoe.

Good afternoon, OF.

It's been about 28F most of the day. Low of 18F tonight.. The snow hasn't stopped since this morning and the wind is supposed to gust to 50 mph tonight. I'm guessing there's at least 6" out there so far. We're under a severe weather warning until Sat morning. Some parts around WI are to get 15" but I think we'll get about a foot.

I let the chickens out in the kennel but not out to free range as this is too bad for them.

I hope everyone's safe where you are as it seems it's the weekend for just about anything.
