The Old Folks Home

No biggie, really. I'm all set now to get Social Security. That makes me feel a bit old. But 30+ years ago when hubby and I set up our IRAs, we were thinking that SS might not even be around by the time we got to "that" age. So it actually feels like a gift, of sorts.

As a friend told me, "Yeah, but you earned it, so enjoy it."

I haven't drawn mine yet. Still typing transcription and drawing pension for another year then might apply. I'd be 64+ so pretty decent amt. I'd go longer but I'm worrying lately.

A bird in the hand...

Sally, I need to do the same sometime this week.

Dh went to the Dr. this morning, which meant I had to take grandson to bus stop. Before Dh left, he asked if I wanted him to bring back some donuts. NO! I got grandson up at the right time, then 8 mins. before it was time to go, I started the truck to warm it up a bit, and turned the seat heaters on. Got grandson to the bus stop, and Dh shows up with a box of donuts. Why did he even show up there, since I had it well covered? He kept insisting we had to eat a donut, but we didn't want a donut, which I had already told Dh, before he got them. Besides that, I don't allow food, or syrupy drinks in my new truck. He knows the rules. So he swoops in with his Super Hero complex, and gives donuts to everyone at the bus stop.

I guess it was sort of good thing he showed up, because one of the neighbor's dogs got out, and one of the people at the bus stop had put the dog in their car. When the bus came to get the kids, the guy followed Dh to the dog's home, and returned him.

Sooooooo, Dh's doctor report was good. BP good, glucose good, heart good, etc. Humana pays for a diet program. Yeah, Dh is in dire need of being on a diet again, but that's not exactly what they put him on. It's a weekly shot, and a daily pill. That's the diet program. This man has the gall to stand in front of me, claiming to be on a diet, when over the past several months, I've lost 48 lbs., but I worked for it. I did the hunger pains at first, until my stomach shrunk. I've drooled while saying no to sweets, and that extra little helping of favorite foods, etc. He's talking about being on a diet consisiting of a weekly shot, and a daily pill, WHILE EATING ANOTHER DONUT! @#($*&@&^$($* GRRRRRRRR! Still, the fool doesn't understand why I got the urge to choke him.

That's downright mean to tempt you like that! I hope he was being funny! 🫣

No, he was not being funny. He seriously thinks he can take shortcuts with his weight loss, instead of changing his eating habits. It doesn't work that way. Yes, he will lose the weight with the chemical assistance, BUT without addressing the core problem, a healthier, lower calorie diet, as soon as the shots stop, the weight rushes back on. I've got friends that did the doctor assisted weight loss like that, for years. They'd start towards the end of Winter, so they'd be able to wear a bathing suit, and hit the beach at the tail end of Spring. By the end of Summer, they'd have already started gaining again, BUT bathing suit weather would be over, so it didn't matter to them until the following end of Winter. Rinse, repeat.

First off, my weight gain wasn't due to overeating. It began with all the steroids they gave me for chemo. They pumped me FULL of them for at least 6 months, to counteract the horrific effects of the chemo. Once you've been on that high of a dosage, for that long of a time, your system doesn't just go back to a normal metabolism. The older you are, the longer it takes to get the metabolism to start working again. It takes at least 2 years for my metabolism to begin to recover, and start beginning to try to function correctly. By the 5th. month, you can literally gain weight on water, when taking that much steroids.

As I said, your metabolism doesn't just snap right back, once you've stopped taking the high doses of steroids. The first time, it took just a little over 2 years for me to get things changed around, and get my weight back down.

Something that helped a lot, was that we lived near a great green grocer. Instead of pizza, I'd get the big Shitake mushroom caps, and use them sort of like a pizza crust, and pile bits of spinach, onions, tomatoes, peppers, and just a small sprinkle of shredded Parmesan cheese on top. The were delicious, filling, healthy, and calorie smart. Instead of pasta, I'd get Spaghetti Squash, cut in half, then fill the centers with a cooked down (thickened) meat spaghetti sauce, using an almost no fat hamburger meat in it. Cover with foil, and bake until done. It's delicious, and the squash has more fiber, is significantly more nutricious, and has less calories than pasta. I did all kinds of things like this, and even Dh would lose weight. Now, most of the good produce stands, and green grocers are not as commonplace as before, and the selection is not like before either. Bacon bits, and diced tomatoes can be wrapped in lettuce. No bread needed. In case of emergency, when eating a hamburger, automatically throw out the top bun. (This used to bug Dh, but when I'd order a meal out, before the food got to the table, I'd get a to-go container, then put half the food in it for another meal.

5 years later, when I had to do the chemo all over again, it took even longer for my metabolism to normalize. That's why it was so important for me to get my diet, and weight back under control this time. I KNOW it's going to take even longer for my metabolism to get back on track, than it did the first 2 times.

BUT have no fear, Dh and his doctor think a shot, and a pill will straighten him right out. :he

BTW, here's a hint: There is a big difference in the acid content between summer grown tomatoes, and fall tomatoes. Fall tomatoes have a higher acid content, and usually are not quite as sweet as summer tomatoes. This is reflected in canned tomatoes, and sauces. Take a carrot, and grate it, or chop into very small pieces, and add it to your canned tomatoes, or sauces, when cooking. It will cook down to nothing, help neutralize the acid, and sweeten the tomatoes.
