The Old Folks Home

Since one of the houses on the road sold for a half mill, our property values have gone up. The neighbor who had a heart attack (and her hubby fell and broke his hip) will probably move in the somewhat near future, if one of their kids can't move in with them. (They're in their 70s.) Their house will sell in a heart beat; they have a pool, a hot tub, and a lovely view. I can see a bidding war for their house too. That will most likely send our property values up again.

Which will raise our taxes. I've seen this scenario coming for a few years, when the housing market caught fire. There isn't anything I can do about it. We're not moving, so we have to plan for that extra expense, and find a way to pay them. :hmm

Where are they going?
Columbia. And yeah, NO IDEA how that would be anything but worse... but... :idunno Not my problem.
I have also read the proposed changes to Michigan's Right To Farm Act that include changing the minimum size of property to have chickens to 1/4 acre. 5 chickens per quarter acre, capped at 25 chickens.

That could impact my neighbor who has 30? 36? chickens.
That is insane and incredibly terrible. :barnie

I always wonder HOW stuff like that can happen?

Same issue here. We know a number of people that have had to sell their place and move further out because of the tax hikes.

I greatly dislike all the people moving here!!!

Fortunately for us... not everyone wants to live on a dead end in the middle of nowhere. It is not maintained by the county.

We have bugs out here. We have critters and mice out here. Sometimes the road doesn't get plowed for a few days, and we're on our own. Ditto with the power. Outages can last for days.

It takes a certain kind of person to live out here. I hope anyone who buys the neighbor's house is aware of all its shortcomings.

Because what we do have is quiet and privacy in great abundance.

Good morning, OF.
There is also a kind for the bathroom that is mold resistant. I really should have used that kind in my bathrooms.
My sister had 4 sons - I get it.

Reality says, 'probably not'. Retired state police officer and his wife moved here several years ago. "Why are there no street lights? Why is garbage pickup not provided? Why is that neighbor running a business out of his secluded driveway? Why are dogs barking? Why are the deer eating my shrubs?" and this list went on and on.

That is exactly what happened here! We were part of the county, we were pretty happy with that. Then the newcomers decided we should become a city. With that of course comes hiring police officers, forming a court, hiring judges etc…then of course the public works yada yada yada.

Our county has merciful property tax breaks for seniors which we couldn’t live here without! The property directly behind us just sold for 1.7 million. Same size property, but the people were architects/interior designers.

There was a guy next door many years ago who asked, "Who plows the road?" Uh... Hubby, and a neighbor...
"What do you do with the leaves when you rake them up?" Um... dump them out in the woods to compost, or make a compost pile.

They didn't last long.
There are those that can co-habitate with nature, and thrive. There are those that can not. Usually it's the can nots that are a PITA.
Yup.

We learned to take care of a lot of things that "just happen" in the city. Plowing the road. Taking the garbage out to the corner. Dealing with power outages.

Street lights? That's what flashlights are for! :lau Oh, and walking by the light of the moon? That is country magic!
