I have a pea-chick! You guys are GOOD at that vibe thing! Still waiting on the second one. I called the lady who owns them and she wants to raise them. She asked if she could borrow the hen to help. I am thinking about it. I would feel better about it if she had a more secure place to keep them. I am hoping that one is a boy and I can get it back. On the other hand, I would probably do better raising them here so they would be less likely to leave. Are all pea-chicks yellow? If it were a chick, I would expect it to be white. Where's Yinepu when I need her?

The only yellow pea chicks I have ever had have been from white peafowl.

Okay guys, I need your help! I have one pea chick and a cracked pea egg. I know NOTHING about raising pea chicks and am begging for guidance. The chick and egg (and 4 chicken eggs) are under a BO hen and she has done an excellent job so far. I tried to raise two poults in the spring and lost them at about four weeks old. I have no idea what the problem was so I am terrified about the peas. Should I separate the pea from the hen and raise it in a brooder? Should I build a wire bottom cage? Clean out a room in the coop and leave them with the hen? HELP?! The cracked egg does not have an obvious pip. It has long cracks in several directions. There is no sound coming from inside, even when I tap on it. Right now, the hen is in a nest box off the main coop. I have closeed it off so she can't get out that way but can get into the feed area of the coop. She is still sitting on the unhatched pea egg and four chicken eggs. The due date on the pea eggs is this coming Wednesday, the chicken eggs should be hatching any day. I bought 30% gamefowl starter and 18% chick starter to mix, but what is the ratio I need to use? What meds, vitamins, wormers should I get right away? I will try to get pics tomorrow!

I pulled the second egg, the one with the cracks in it, to put in the bator in case I needed to help. It smells. I will dispose of it tomorrow afternoon after an eggtopsy. Bummer.

But, you have one, at least. I don't know nothin' 'bout birthin' . . . . no, no, no! Focus, Bunny! (Sorry, I'm so tired I'm getting punchy ) I'm afraid I've never dealt with peas. The very mention of peafowl makes me feel a little sad and wistful, because of course you know who they make me think of. But, have you inquired on the Peafowl forum?

I know nothing of pea fowl other than they are gorgeous. On BYC there is another area for other birds: ducks, turkeys, etc each have their own area. I would post there to reach an experienced person. I suspect turkey and pea fowl are similar in need for high protein. Turkey poults are insectavors ( sorry about spelling) for the early months; pea fowl probably are too. As for diseases, IDK. At least the hen won't be trying to take it for a swim, so no worries there.

Many people don't feed the chick starter but use gamebird instead; I would not raise the pea fowl by it self: I have turkeys and chickens that are inseparable, though there have been times when the turkeys turned on their buddy and she was moved to the hen house. SHe often tries to visit but the turkeys abuse her. So sad. As social creatures everyone has a buddy. So if turkeys are in the mix I feed the higher protein. 50:50 mix is 24% protein. WIll you be feeding any supplementary meat protein? I'm betting peafowl don't grow fast like BBW turkeys which really do make great use of the 28% protein feeds. 24% should work fine as I suspect peafowl don't grow nearly as fast as the BBW.

Have you concidered a search thru Deerman's old posts. Perhaps there is some info in there that you CAN use. Sorry he is no longer here to help directly.

Great idea, Arielle! I will try to do that tomorrow. Hey, do you guys think it will hurt to freeze the starter? I had to buy two, fifty pound bags to get what I needed (less than 30%, more than 18%) and I will be able to use it later if it will keep.
