The Old Folks Home

Deb that is so expensive!

I don't miss those prices at all although I do miss AZ.

Cynthia, what a gorgeous SS. Mine's molting right now and she looks so dreadful, too. She got a lot more spots last year when she molted. I keep telling her she's getting grey with old age, but she just gives me a funny look and commences begging for food. You can see how skinny she is in this picture, she must need more treats.

I love my SS's! Had two before the 'clean out' and had to get two more. My current pullets aren't near as friendly, but then they haven't started laying yet. Just can't beat them for looks and personality

My ss aren't good layers. In fact I'm always joking about "If Hoppy laid an egg..." - but she has much more pressing business than egg laying, like begging for treats and pacing the fence line trying to find me in the house to give me the I'm-So-Hungry-Give-Me-ATreat Stare.

Funny how I have 3 SS girls, and 41 other non-SS birds - I open up the turtle sandbox and there are always 3 SS in it, first. They love to dig and dustbathe. Must be something in their genes.

Penny was laying pretty good, but, her eggs weren't very large..wondering if that is how it is with these birds. I hope the cinnamons will lay larger eggs..at least the eggs that came were pretty good sized. But, have to say, the eggs that Penny lays have a very pretty pink tint. :)

Hey Kansas, most pullets, get friendlier once they start laying..but you probably already knew that. :)

Ok, things are definitely getting weird around here.

Hubby just called me outside to see this big spiderweb that is getting built (by a big spider, naturally) in the tree branches just outside one of the kitchen windows. As I started to walk down the back steps, something hit me on the arm. I looked near my foot where the "something" landed - it was a snake! A baby corn snake, maybe 14 inches long; it had apparently dropped off of the porch roof. I've become pretty much used to having the odd Anole fall on me during the day, or having tree frogs come flying at me out of the dark (they come to eat the bugs that get attracted by the lights) but snakes in the dark is a new one!

Ew. Snakes and spiders in the dark. You would have found me (after showering), cowering under the blankets in bed.

BF is off to go inflict mental harm on millions of young childrens hearts (and my own) by shooting Bambi's mom or dad. He attempted to prepare me yesterday for a potential deer body swinging from a tree on the property for a few days. I told him he had to find another venue for that. Sick, but I can picture the chickens thinking it's their own personal deer treat and I'm already psychologically damaged enough.
