The Old Folks Home

I took 12 birds to the NE bantam show, to sell in the back. Did pretty well-- moved 10 to new homes.

THen I poked around the show cages after the judges finished. I'm always surprised at the overwhelming popularity of the bantams. Their cuteness is delightful. Just not what I want to eat, either as a roast or an egg. Bigger is better.

THe buff orpington rooster was huge; though not as big as the BO I saw last year at the Boston show. THe brilliant white and black SSH was also huge compared to my spunky hatchery boy. Nice to see a real SSH as I thought I had a real one. ( Not.) ANd I found golden laced orpingtons!!!!!!! I love this color and thought this color was limited to the golden laced wyandotte. DId I say I LOVE the golden laced ? I'll say it again! I looked at the FBCM for a long time, very nice girls. 2 pullets. WIll try to track down the breeder of those girls.

No turkeys-- only mine in the sales area. THey attracted a lot of attention. Until the 2 geese arrived, then their incescent honking kept heads turning!

The most attractive birds of the day , for me was a tiny black duck, with bright beetle green shine in the sun. My attention kept straying back to those mini ducks. A toy sized, not real, black duck. Too cute.

Sorry ladies ( and gents) no pics as I was in a rush to pack up and arrive on time early this morning. I did get to talk to Mr Rhodes, a life long breeder of BUckeyes. THAT is a breed I want to add next year. He only lives about 5-6 miles from me.

Alright folks, we're down to the wire. Let's have it! What's on YOUR menu for Thursday?

DH is cooking the turkey in our Big Easy Cooker on the back porch. I am cooking...

Cornbread dressing - 3" thick with lots of chicken, celery, eggs, and sage.
Cranberry Sauce - canned, they won't have any other kind
Giblet gravy
Butter beans - DH's fav
Broccoli Cheese Casserole - my fav
Black-Eyed Peas with snaps and okra
Cooked Cabbage
English peas
Mashed Potatoes with brown gravy - the boys' fav besides the dressing
Rolls and cornbread
Sweet Potato Casserole with pecan crisp topping
Sweet Tea
Walmart Lady Fruit Fluff
Pecan Pie
Peach Cobbler

To top it off, since my DS#3 was tested positive for Flu, it will just be the five of us!

ETA: Come to think of it, that is ridiculous! I need to downsize a bit.

Oh! and I forgot the Fruit Fluff!

There, that's some better.

ETA: Blk eyed peas and cabbage

I'm going the wrong way! I just love good old, down home, deep south, soul food.

Wow, Wisher, that's quite a menu. Our Thanksgiving is always sort of a potluck. We're having turkey, dressing, gravy, broccoli casserole, sweet potato casserole, home-made yeast rolls, pecan pie, and caramel cake. I hope your son is better soon!

Wisher that is quite a menu. We are going to have turkey, home made gravy (I have a great recipie for turkey gravy that takes forever to make but is delicious), stuffing, mashed potatoes, peas in butter sauce, broccoli in cheese sauce, rolls and apple pie. I am also planning on making pecan puffs (yummy cookies) today along with the pie.
