The Olive-Egger thread!

kansaseq, I think you'll have the darkest-olive eggs from the pullets hatching out of the Wellie hens, but I'd say the best chances of getting one to look like Tequila's mom would come from an EE.

I'm pretty sure his color is dominant unless I cross with a blue or splash (or not-have used the chicken calculator), so that shouldn't be an issue. Guess I'm most focused on the offspring's egg color. Sure would help if I knew what color he'd lay if he were a girl

I am leaning towards putting him over a Barnie hen, though.

Yeah I think you're right about the color and I don't think it would make a difference whether the mother was EE or Wellie in that regard.

If he was a girl, my guess is he'd lay a light olive egg. Most of the F1 Marans x EEs do, but some get lucky and lay a dark olive. It's generally the B1 generation, back crossed to a Marans, or a Wellie in your case, that starts getting impressively dark eggs consistently.

Yea, I think you're right. Probably need to think about crossing back to Barnie for best egg color. Thanks!

That first rooster looks almost identical to one of my roos! He's EExRIR. Only difference I can see is the comb. Mine has a really strange comb that starts out a pea comb and ends up a straight comb on top and is huge.

Hi everybody! I'm a big fan of the olive egg, and a lurker on this thread.

I thought I'd go ahead and post my story.

This spring I set 6 eggs from my 2 EE hens who were covered by my Welsummer rooster. All hatched, and as time passed, it became obvious that I had hatched 5 roosters. Lucky me! Not. Anyhoo, the one little girl that hatched has grown into a lovely hen, and she looks so ready to lay! She has been squatting for at least a week now, yesterday I noticed that a nestbox had been completely messed up with shavings kicked everywhere, and that has never happened in that pen before. Since she's the only nonlayer in there, I'm assuming it was her. And totally hoping for new egg in the next few days! And obviously hoping that it will be an olive egg. At least some shade of green...

So here she is. Evelyn, my one and only olive egger. Hopefully.
