The Olive-Egger thread!

Is that a real egg? OMG, that is beautiful, for sure. Actually, I do prefer the glossy eggs over the matte. I get both, from my Marans.

Yes this egg is real. I hope that just like dark egg laying breeds producing such a wide range of gorgeous dark russet to chocolate to coffee to flower pot red- that the oliven egg producers will end up with a wide range of hues from Nipponese " Wasabi" and "Edamame" Green to serpentine, copper, bronze and so on. Great work people don't hate on me please.

Nipponese Edamame Green

Wow, wow and double wow. How do I get some of those eggs? Who had/has them? Is there a specific breed that lays them or was it also someone's "mutt" mixes?

Here's what I gathered this week that are going in incubator tonight. I'm trying for blue hens with copper neck/hackles with tufts and feathered legs. My Olive Egger flock started with one blue/barred EE hen who loved the B.C. Marans and stayed in their coop. She laid the light blue/green eggs. I initially hatched all of her eggs and I've kept breeding the offspring back to pure BCM roos. Now, in the 3rd and 4th generations the eggs are getting so dark they are a coppery/golden brown. They have the coating that is easily scratched off. It's also hard to get a good picture of the color:

I've now let the flock free range with everyone else (a dozen different breeds) so it will be interesting to see what this hatch looks like and what color eggs they will lay.

I would love to have some of those "Nipponese Edamame Green" eggs.

Oh yeah, aqueastion here:
Isthere anyone else out there that is getting a "khaki" colored egg? I have 1 or 2 hens that are laying one. At least I call them khaki, they are so dark green they almost look brown. If I can figure it out I'll try to post some pictures this weekend to show you what I'm talking about.

First, WOW!! on those green eggs. . . I'd pay a LOT OF MONEY for eggs like those!! And, if one can make them with Olive Eggers, I'm all aboard for working towards it with my various selection of parents (Easter Eggers, Araucanas, Ameraucanas, - but only various Marans for the dark portion)

As for Khaki - Umm, Khaki is a very light greenish brown, not dark. . .

There are plenty EE's and poorly bred Ameraucanas who lay a khaki colored egg.

In my opinion they're better than green. They're oak. Exquisite.

As for new shades of green

you'll have to select for it.

Still have them. Did not breed them this year. Had some "city trouble" and pretty much lost a whole year. (will be contacting an attorney soon to see about punishing the city for their RIDICULOUS behavior and claims. If my thinking is straight, I'm gonna open a whole can of chicken whup-arse on them soon)

So... only have a small flock, two roos and a half dozen hens. On a different note, I have been getting chocolate tinged birds from that pen. Seriously. Not late moult chocolate faded black either.

Edit to add... only a small flock of Barred Olive Eggers. Still have a MESS O' BIRDS, probably more than I need. Still have the Mille Fleur Cochins, two different lines of Copper Black Marans, as well as a (gasp) potentially a bantam CBM pair, more on them later. And, BLRW in full size and bantam, Dark Brahmas, Lav Orps, English type Black Orps to improve the lav orps. Also have my friend's Jersey Giants, and my EE pen, a few Ameraucanas, Silkies and Showgirls, Mottled Javas and Coronation/Light Sussex pen. And the Bourbon Red and Midget White pens too. Oh, and Cotton Patch Geese. Can you imagine a WHOLE YEAR wasted out of all those birds? City's gonna have to barf up a KIDNEY before I'm going to be satisfied with them.

Sam. I am Sam. Sam I am. Do you like green eggs and ham?

I do like green eggs and ham!!

I know a lot of you use the BCM/ Ameraucana cross for olive eggers. My FBCM took FOREVER to lay. Should I expect the same of Sam? She is 22 weeks, I think.

The only birds that take longer than Marans to lay are AMERAUCANAS! There are exceptions of course. I stopped counting with my Ameraucanas and my Olive Eggers. One OE was trying out a nest today, so I think she may FINALLY lay. Don't bother counting the weeks. You'll just get frustrated.

I must be one of those exceptions. Yes, the average for both Ameraucanas and Araucanas is 24-28 weeks, but mine started anywhere from 17-22 weeks. Honest.

My Black Coppers began anywhere from 21-24, my Blue Wheaten Marans began at 24-30 weeks. I still am waiting for one, and she's 8 months old.

So, I think it depends on the strains. . . I believe my OE's should start early because their parents include my Araucanas, which began really early, at 17-21 weeks of age. The boys were mating at 1 month old, and that's no joke.

Thanks! My Marans didn't start till I believe 31 or 32 weeks (not sure exactly how old she was when we got her). The EE is two weeks older than the OE, and she still hasn't layed, either.

Patience is a virtue, I guess!!
