The Olive-Egger thread!

ALL of my welsummer cross Olive Eggers look just like welsummers with beards. Yellow legs and all. I used wheaten ameraucanas and wild type partridge EEs. The hens are not incredibly large- probably smaller than either welsummers or ameraucanas at 6 months. They're cute though- I would say they are "spritely" if that is a word.

Well this is the first part of the Olive Egger process.... I have just now gotten the Welsummer/Blue Ameraucana eggs hatching.... then when and If I get any hens from those eggs... then I will need to decide what to breed with... Is the Black Copper Maran the best to breed with.... I am still learning this process.... or does it matter.... oh I have gotten myself so confused, lol

The welsummer crosses probably won't lay the super dark olive eggs. Mine are more of an army green. I am crossing them back to the wellie roo to make them darker next generation, but if you have marans too you could try some with each to get different shades of olive. How fun!!!!

Yea that is what I thought... then I thought I would order some Black Copper Maran eggs and see if I get any roos from that and cross breed the Olive Egger hen with a BCM roo... then I should have a decent color of olive to hopefully wow the little community's stock sale next summer

I agree that you won't get as DARK as the Welsummers if you use them. If you really want the "real McCoy", better get some Marans with DARKER egg shell colors and work from there. I know there are exceptions with some Welsummers that would be as dark as the Marans but I figured it might throw purplish tint to the olive eggs.

Hi,
I recently got a Pure Olive Egger Rooster from a BYC'er, and I also hatched out an OE chick from his flock.
Now, I have a very dark Brown egg laying Golden Buff hen, and I have 1 Dark Blue EE hen, she lays Light Green eggs. I also have 1 EE X Grey American Game hen that lays Light Green eggs. Which one should I breed either of my OE boys to?

This is the Little OE Chick ( 100% sure it's a Rooster ).

My other OE boy has a Full Beard and looks more like a EE roo.

well I got my answer this am:-( I held onto some straight comb girls from my hatches this Summer and she laid her first egg this am-it was frozen and cracked but it was cute -little and BROWN--now I knew the chances of her laying a colored egg were slim but I was hoping:) Now the wait for the others:)

Isn't it funny, most people just want eggs. But noooooooo, we have to have eggs that are a particular color.

Still passing the time waiting for mine to begin laying.

Wow - lots going on since I've been here last! Woot!

Kelly, stop complaining! 21 weeks is YOUNG! The average layer being to lay at 24 weeks. If I had a wagging finger emote, I'd post it here at you!!! You don't want them laying too soon...it could cause issues later.

Okay, off my soap box now!

Those are some mighty pretty chickens you have there, CrazyCat!

pawtrait - holy cuteness overload!
