The Olive-Egger thread!

Ok, lots of fun chickie pictures for you. I have four OE chicks from HappyMtn. I think two are F1s and two are F2s?

HappyMtn, maybe you can tell me what you think gender wise. If you can't tell....oh well, fun pics of your grandchickies

It was BEAUTIFUL in southern California yesterday, 75+ degrees, so I took the chicks outside for their first little romp in the sun. I think they liked it, minus being somewhat terrorized by a 3.5 and one year old. I got a new camera for my birthday so had fun trying it out.

Alright, contestant number 1: Brigid. She is the chick that looks most like a Welsummer. She has a very defined V on her head and defined eye markings so I am assuming its a girl?

Contestant Number 2: Clover. looks kind of Welsummer ish, but less defined V and eye markings. So maybe a male? Not sure. And I don't know what egg it hatched out of. But its cute.

Alright, here are 3 and 4, the blond chipmunks. I already think they are cockrels because they have super thick legs and are fighting each other with their feet. They look the same to me, so I call them both Gulliver.

I think Brigid is a Welsummer, not an OE. But yes- looks like a girl. I think we need one more week on the others- make sure you watch their chest and back. Big black splotches mean boy, but a fine partridge pattern of more muted colors will be girls. My girls usually get fully covered wings first too. So cute! Ahhh- if only I were in California today.....

I know Brigid looks exactly like a welsummer...but none of the Welsummer eggs hatched. One went bad before hatching and one never hatched. So I'm thinking maybe she just inherited a lot of Welsummer characteristics. Either that or I can't count my eggs, which wouldn't be that weird.

I would not be at all disappointed if she turns out to be a Welsummer!

I might have labeled it wrong- the wellies and f2 OEs are in the same coop. Or else she got the wellie 1/2 from an OE mom and the other 1/2 from her wellie dad

She should lay a darker speckled eggs, I would say. My wellies don't lay those super dark red eggs, more like a 4 on the marans scale with spots all over.

I am doing a similar experiment with my "Delarocks". Dad is a pure heritage del, and the moms are del x blue barred rock. So far almost 1/2 the babies look like pure dels! The rest look like blue or black barred rocks.
