The Olive-Egger thread!

SHe is very pretty

Cyn, she looks just like a Blue Wheaten Ameraucana- with feathered shanks. She's lovely!

I'll be breeding some Wheaten OEs later this year, using Wheaten Marans and Wheaten Penedesenca. I'm really excited!

Thanks, I thought she was just the prettiest girl ever! She's friendly as well. Can't wait to see her egg color.

Kathy says she thinks her mama was one of the BW Ameraucanas rather than one of the EEs in with the Wheaten Marans rooster. I tend to agree, just looking at her coloration.

I do have a BCM rooster, a young one. ( 3 months old ) So I could try that also.

Now.... if I breed the green egger chicks to the BCM (when they grow up) will that darken the egg color next generation ? Or will that be too dark and make mud ?

They could be a nice dark olive color but maybe muddy. It's not an exact science. I don't mind the muddy eggs either. I enjoy the full range. Cull your straight combed chicks from that cross, and keep the pea combed ones.

Ok so trial & error ! Peacombs only got it.... can I ask why ? And thank you so much for the info

So my friend has TWO broodies and wants some OE eggs. Would Sherman be fertile at 24 weeks? He certainly is amorous!

Do I have to do anything special to the eggs or just stick them in a carton on the counter? Will they show signs of being fertile in a week of counter sitting or should I put them outside (we're having temps in the 90s) for a couple of days before I take them over? I'll be saving eggs all week. Neither of us have incubators.

No no, one ought not to be trying to half-incubate them and then stick them under a hen - it's all or nothing. If your rooster is doing the deed, then they're probably fertile. Just put them under a hen and then candle them...if they're not fertile, buy peeps at the 3 week mark and swap them with the eggs in the wee hours of the night. Sitting on the counter, or outside in the 90s, does not an incubator make.
