The Olive-Egger thread!

Ok, this thread is just too long for me to read all the way through lol.
I have a question for all you oliver egger people....

I have a EE that is blue and tan (see picture) she is now about 8 weeks old and I am planning on breeding her. I love blue birds.... and I want more. Can I breed her to another breed of bird (a blue copper marans) and end up with the genetic ratio of 50% blue, 25% black and 25% splash? Of course I expect to see the EE markings as well.... Or does it not work when crossing breeds?? I am curious and I know that test mating would be the way to go.... but I wondered if anyone has tried this or can explain what would work for me.

Thanks!!!

In theory that sound like that would work

I never thought of it that way. Give it a go and let us know!

So my next question

Has anyone ever bred a dark brown EE to a blue bird (marans)? What comes to mind is a blue laced wyandotte kind of color. That would be so cool....

This is Reese.... because she reminds me of a reeses peanut butter cup :) very chocolate in color

Just remember that her "adult" coloring isn't in until her 1yr molt..... so she may be more blue or more wheaten than she is now..... I'd breed them though, I LOVE BLUES!! I have a Blue Pit Bull to add to all my blue chickies!! LOL

I bred a Blue Ameraucana with a Splash Blue Copper Maran:

All 5 peeps show blue, 4 received the double blue gene and are splash!! (one splash missing bc he was a Roo I didn't want)

I'm keeping "Oliver" to breed to his father's sister, a standard Blue Copper Maran, for DARKER OLIVE eggs!!!

So I should get mostly the darker blues & maybe some splash, IF she carries a recessive gene. Not to mention darker olive tone eggs.... cannot wait!!!

I forgot about about plumage.... oooohh she better stay blue!!!!!! She is a lovely danty bird and can not wait for her to grow up. It sure is fun playing with it all.

Thank you for sharing your birds and information too!

I am going to PLAY with lacing on Blue Ams with a BLRW. I know some are going to the EE pen

It is really just a fun project, I don't expect it to work right on the AM, but might be fun trying.

If you are taling about feather color, a blue is a black base with blue to dilute the black to blue. Cross a blue/black on a brown hen will cause the feathering to be blue or black. Sometime the neck has red leakage. DH thinks they are very pretty.
