The Olive-Egger thread!

Mary, seariously? 3 blacks and only 1 blue? LENSTERS! What are your thoughts? I am only using blue hens with my copper black rooster, and last year, used 2 black and 2 blue and was getting mostly blues. I thought if I used ONLY blue hens, I'd get MORE blue babies...but more BLACK??? ARGH! I know genetics are difficult with mutt chickens, which these are...but I'm a bit confused.

I HAVE had a few that appeared to be black that were actually blues when they feathered out...maybe you got one of those, Mary! HOpe so! Anything on the last two??

Oh, guess I was typing as you posted that last pic. CUTE PIC, Mary! That 3rd one MAY be a very dark blue.

I just opened the last two and they appeared to be scrambled with nothing formed. I don't really understand why they lost weight with the others except that the shells are porous and they probably started drying out. So my hatch rate subtracting the one clear and two that cracked would be 67%. Pretty good considering they were shipped and started out in the Brinsea with the low temp.

My incubator is turned off for the first time in months. The Brinsea upstairs is running with one Icelandic egg in it! It is going to be on the Parole bus to Kelly's house soon along with her Olive Eggers!

I gotta get some of these chickens outta here! Rumor has, Kelly can keep up to 200!

Porous? Gosh, I've never had that issue with eggs from that pen; I've had a few SPPR eggs reported to be porous, but not any from my Marans pen. Interesting! Well, even if they're not fertilized they'll still lose weight during incubation, so that doens't surprise me. Wish more had hatched for you, though! Send the blue one to me!!! Pick me! Pick me!!!

NO NO NO...meaning all egg sheels are porous not the bad kind of porous! I am not referring to the ones that feel rough and are speckled when you candle them. I just meant that all eggs shells have the capability of air, water, etc going through the shell! Yikes.

Sorry Wynette, I'm closer than you, the blue is mine! Besides, you can hatch your own!

And hatch I will! I just set 10 of them in my new bator (well.....converted-from-a-lab-bator-bator) the other night with more Marans. I really don't "need" any more olive eggers...but I set 10. I think my DH may divorce me!

OH, I see what you mean, Mary! I've just been on the 'net looking to find out causes of porosity in eggs, and the only thing I could find is "layer flock is aged", but mine are all less than 2! Thanks for the further explanation - I was in panic mode! HA!

Wynette,
I am hatching Olive Eggers right now. I got 2 Blue and 6 Black. My roosters are Marans (both blue, and black copper). I was thinking the color is kinda like the BBS thing, with some being blue and some black.
