The Olive-Egger thread!

So, my , um , OE laid her first egg a few days ago. When I found it I was kind of thinking that one of the EE had laid a small egg. She's supposed to be f3. Le sigh. She's so pretty, one of my favorite colors. I guess I'll have to wait a fews more months to see if my second OE lays an olive egg. LOL!

Hmmm. I was just wondering if maybe CCLs aren't great for OEs because the Leghorn genes supress brown?

What was the CL crossed with? If it was a dark brown egg layer the results should be an Olive egg. Even my CL x light brown egg layers produces very nice green eggs.

They were supposedly f2 (I guess not f3) . The rooster is f3 and the hens f1, I don't know if that makes them f2 or f3. They were all supposed to Marans/ameraucana. I have no idea, though, because she looks like CL. Her eggs are lighter than the egg she hatched from.

Moving past f1 it gets harder to get the correct colors. It would take a lot of culling breeding back to parents to keep the correct brown and blue egg shell for OE eggs.

Yeah. I had looked at the egg color flow chart posted here, and I think to get the olives I really want, I'll have to make my own, and be diligent about keeping the egg color with successive generations.
When I first decided to try an OE project, I thought starting with an OE would be a good idea. But, I've learned more about the genetics of egg coloration since then.

It is a constant learning process!

Yes, make your own and make sure to post your progress here.

I can't wait to see what you come up with.
