The Olive-Egger thread!

This is my first OE that I have bred. she (hopefully) is from an americana and a chocolate orpington. Not a lot of brow going on in that dad, but I am hopeful. I have 2 OE roos right now. Cuckoo Maran x Americana. One is BIG and has more of the americana build. The other looks like the cuckoo maran. ANy thoughts on who might be a better keep?
Do they have pea combs?

I'm no expert on cuckoo Marans, but this chick looks to be a barred bird (that looks like a head spot in this photo...). Any chance the sire is the cuckoo Marans cock/erel?
The chick is not from a MAran. It is from A chocolate orpington dad and an americana mom. The mom looks very golden partridge and has puffed cheeks. Not seeing any puffing yet, but this little chick is looking more americana every day!

Hi all, I recently hatched out some second generation OE chicks. The moms were both first generation OE hens (half Ameracauna, half Marans) and the dad is a Black Copper Marans. All the chicks look identical to BCM chicks, they even have a standard comb - does this mean they won't produce olive colored eggs? I read somewhere, perhaps in this thread, that a standard comb means they only carry the dark brown egg gene, and a pea comb is synonymous with olive egg layers. Any help is appreciated, I'm new to this whole breeding and hatching thing.

The pea comb is what I have read also. However, I have an Olive Egger that layers a beautiful olive egg (the darkest of my six Olive Eggers) that has a standard comb. She looks just like two of her sisters, but they have a pea comb and they lay an almost blue egg. The single comb pullet lays the darker green egg. She is middle right in the picture. I have some of her eggs due to hatch on Tuesday or Wednesday next week. I am worried her offspring may lay a brown egg since she doesn't have the pea comb and her eggs are so dark already. Kern

Her comb looks like a cream legbar comb.

I bought all of those as 4 month old pullets, so I don't know what their heritage is. The lady told me they were all Olive Eggers that she hatched from shipped eggs. My guess would be Legbar X Marans. All the other ones have pea combs, but their eggs are much bluer. Kern

The pea comb and the blue egg shell gene is not associated with each other with Cream legbars. With EEs, araucanas and Ameraucanas, it is only in the 90% range for predicting a blue egg shell gene.

The chickens are very nice looking!

They are happy spoiled noisy complainers. They get to get out and free range in my backyard just about every day. My backyard for living in town is pretty large, about 85' by 60'. The ground used to be nice and level and now it looks like a few hundred bombs have been dropped back there. Kern
