The Olive-Egger thread!

First looks to me like it may have cuckoo marans in it. Don't know about the other two.
X2, the seller should know what she is breeding.
ok i checked with the breeder, the first response I got was that olive eggers are a breed. when i said I thought olive eggers were a mix of breeds this was the response "Oh ok, no your not ours are just multi generational so they are sort of their own breed now. Olive egger roos are bred to olive egger hens, we dont cross anymore. You have to watch out for that and know what generation your getting. Most of ours came from black copper marans, wheaten marans and true ameraucanas". sooo what does that mean?
I'm new at raising chickens. Last yr we got a dozen white leghorn chicks which all turned out to be hens. So this year I branched out. I ordered 3 silkies and 3 olive eggers. none of the silkies survived due to problems with the shipment. I know nothing about olive eggers at all. Thought I could learn here. thank you.

Simplest rule for OE's is dark egg layer bred to blue egg layer. So my OE's are all half marans or welsumer x legbar. Right now I think I favor the welsumer cross, because it looks like they are sexable at hatching while the marans take longer.
Next year I want to try my EE rooster with the same parents and see what they lay.
So many chicken projects to work on.

My Olive Eggers were all accidents (have a broody hen and don't want to stick hands under her or forget to check under her). They are (hatchery) Silver Laced Wyandotte hen X (true) Lavender Ameraucana cock. Never kept them long enough to know how dark the egg was. I'd imagine a light shade of teal. They are either black with slate legs or silver Laced with pink turn green legs. With 1white chick that has 2 small black feathers. All muffed. 2rose combed, 2single combed, and 4 pea combed so far.

So I've tried to read thru but seriously...9,000+ it's not possible :)
My Copper Maran rooster shows up this weekend. I was going to breed him to my EE to get OE. Now I'm told that's not good odds. I do have Ameraucauna & leg bars should I use them instead?
Is also currently getting ready for a hatch. From what I read I want chicks from blue eggs with a beard & a pea comb to breed to my CM to get OE? Does this sound correct?
I'm new to incubating, & really new at trying to crossbreed for egg color. I just think it's such an amazing experience I want to try it!
Here is my current incubator & im using the Brower 846 the big one that holds 100 eggs!
I just had 10 out of 14 hatch Saturday

CM over the Am and Legbar is pretty much 100% for getting OE pullets, if all birds are pure breeds....
........EE cuts your odds in half.

Fantastic!!!! Then that's my plan & im soooo excited!!
Thank you so much.
The eggs would be considered F1 what would I breed them to? Back to a CM or keep a rooster from eggs & breed to him? I need to start researching genetics. It's quite complicated

Either Or.
It is complicated.

Great chart by a very experienced person at the top of this FB group page if you do Facebook.

I have an olive egger gene frizzle roo, and he breed with a smooth feathered blue egger (very small eggs) and a med. Coco maran mix med tan eggs. will be interesting to see how they turned out. I did have a Speckled sussex roo that I think was too young, but he was enthusiastic. So we will see. a Blue Isbar hen is sitting on 8 of these eggs.

I thought I'd share a photo of this cockerel. He's a cross between an EE rooster and a marans hen. Since he has a single comb, I presume he doesn't carry the blue egg gene. He sure is pretty though..

I have a 3 month old pea combed pullet from the same cross. Hopefully she will eventually lay some pretty olive eggs. It may be awhile... Mom didn't lay until she was 9-10 months old.
