Wynette, that 1 olive egger I have left after the attack..............he crowed this morning. I was really hoping you were right about the 3 rows pea comb could be a hen, but nope.

Three of my 5 eggs have hatched! They are a cross from an Americauna hen and a Black copper Marans roo. I hope they are hens! I want some olive eggs! I will let you know about the other two!

Thanks! Question..... They are about 12 hours and 7 hours old. How soon do I have to start feeding them? I realized that I don't have starter feed, and can't get to the feed store until this afternoon. I put water in with them. Will they be OK? Or make an emergency trip to the feed store?

They'll be okay until this afternoon - the sooner you ge them eating, the better, but they'd be fine for today. I usually sprinkle a bit on the puppy pad (don't use shavings until they are at least 3 days old - you can use paper towels or puppy pads, anything absorbent but not slippery) right near the feeder & they'll peck at that first, then sort of find the feeder.

Very nice egg she gave you! Pretty girl, too. She looks like a Splash Marans type.

They are absorbing the yolk for about 3 days for nutrition. I recently read a really really old poultry book, and found it very interesting how they used to do this back in the old days. It said they put the chicks in a box next to the wood stove for warmth for a couple days. They covered the box for darkness, to encourage sleep. The would put in only a water fountain, and no feed until day 3. Then they had a process they followed after that. Anyway, I am now doing my own version of this. The first day or two I put in only water, and add feed on day 2 or 3.

Here is the online book that you can download for free from American Libraries http://www.archive.org/details/cu31924003103698
Page 27 of the book has this information I refer to.

Kathy, there have been several posts on here about folks doing this and then their chicks dying later; which is why I was leery to post that it's okay to leave them for 3 days without food. I don't know know if there's a corolation, but it does worry me. JMO!
