The Olive-Egger thread!

My EEs are laying very light green eggs. I have a BCM roo that im thinking doesnt have the super dark chocolate gene..more medium brown. Is this combo going to work? I am planning on getting pure Ameraucana later... Should I wait to hatch??

That's what I had when I hatched some eggs last fall and I got 2 beautiful olive eggers out of it.

Does anyone know what white does to Lavender? I was thinking about hatching pure lavender Ameraucanas and putting them under my white Marans Roo. What would this give me color wise? I know white is recessive. So would the other colors which made my white pull through on the chicks? Or would the Lav win out assuming they are true Lav and not a back split?

Both white and lavender are recessive than neither will so you will get a black chick probably. You don't really know what color is under the white could be anything really. Since 2 copies of Lav and 2 copies of white are required to express you will not see either in that first cross.

Ohhh Ok. Makes sense!

So would I need to take the fist generation olive eggers from this mix and breed them together to get Lav chicks? (or is that frowned upon?)

Excited to finally join the Olive Egger crew! I just got some 5th generation OEs that are a mix of Black Copper Marans, Ameraucana, Brown Leghorn, and White Leghorn, most look like pea combed BMCs with light to moderate leg feathering. One is a splash, with just a bit of black on one shoulder. I also got two BMC roos (about 3 months) and two stunning blue Ameraucana year old hens that lay a nice blue egg. Here we go... Wheeeee!!!!

My OE is now 14 weeks and Im still stumped on gender!?!?!? he walks very upright but is a big baby and is at the bottom of even the pullet pecking order. No crowing or Roo behavior. No wattles but that is due to the Ameraucana blood. S/he only has one copy of the barring gene because only dad was barred so coloring is not an indication of gender. What do you think?






Here is a close up of the comb, it isnt very wide. Yes its red, but so are my other pullets around the same age.
