The Olive-Egger thread!

thanks Hangtown and ronott1, more pics and weights please as they mature! The UofA blues would not be considered a hybrid because they breed true, correct?

Do either of you plan to cross breed them with blue or dark brown egg layers? If so, what outcome are you hoping for and would it include hybrid vigor especially with regards to egg size?

ronott1 - Pretty cute, your first UofA blue egg, great timing for the post; 4 months seems pretty young, do you think she will burn out early?
I would guess that your olive eggs are CCLxCP? My 3 OE sisters of that mix had eggs that went through quite a few phase changes, some stayed more olive, some went more blue, and there were some sandy textures, but they each did something different. I'm guessing that's due to the hybrid effect. They also had a lot of double yolks early on.

I have two EE x Marans OEs and 5 CL x CP OEs.

My plan is to put 4 UofA Blues pullets and 2 CP pullets in with a UofA Blues Cockerel. That way I will have OEs from the UofA blues.

This is an exciting project for me.

Notes: CL and CCL are Cream Legbars
CP is Crele Penedesenca

This is my first attempt at Olive Eggers. I hatched out two from blue eggs from my first hatch. The parents were Ameraucanas and the rooster was BCM. I think the gold colored one is a cockerel, which is sad, because it's one of the most beautiful birds in the yard. Is this common coloration for an OE roo?

I am picking up 2 EE hens that lay a blue/green egg this saturday. My question is if i put my black copper marans roo over them should I get an olive egg or should I look for a aracauna or ameraucana that lays a true blue egg? Thanks!

Could someone help me with the gender of this bird? It is an olive egger, now about 13 weeks old. This chick had a bright red comb at a very young age. When I sorted them around 10 weeks, I wasn't sure about this one and put it in the bachelor pen. Now, I kind of think it is a hen.

I tried to get a close-up of the tail area. I don't see any sickle feathers, but I don't see them on some of the other young cockerels either. The brown colored feathers are a different cockerel in the background.

Some of the feathers around "her" neck look pointy to me, so I don't know what to think. Sorry the photo is blurry and washed out:

I'm thinking about starting to integrate her in with the other hens, but only once I can confirm her gender.
Thanks for any advice!

She is a Marans X EE? If so, there should be more red and red at the wings.

Mine at 10 weeks:

I am breeding Silver Ameraucana hens to Crele penedesenca roosters
I traded some of my crele penedesenca eggs for another breeders
These are some dark penedesenca eggs. A few of them are as dark as some of the darker Marans eggs I have seen.

So I wonder how common Barred Ameraucana are?  She is a lovely bird!  What color egg does she lay again?  She is a real poster child!  She should be on the front of the Forum!

Now your rooster babies are 1/2 Barred Ameraucana (Blue egg genes) and 1/2 Marans (Dark Brown Egg genes)....so you breed her rooster babies to what kind of pullets to get ???? for the best egg color??  See, thats why I am stuck with White Leghorn eggs still!

I will need a simple chart of something to make my favorite mixes work! I want the Delaware mixes that lay green spotted eggs.  It takes a Delaware Hen and a Marans Rooster.  The resulting Pullet is supposed to lay a green spotted egg?  I have to try that!

I know you explained some of the splits to me, but my mind is like a sieve...it doesnt hold information very well...I've never even bred dogs or horses before....I'm embarrassed to say I accidentally let my cat have a litter of kittens last year - I had to keep three of them because I couldnt find homes for them!  And I could talk with you about chickens and eggs on the phone all day, I love it!!  Take care,  Tina

does the marans roo over delaware mix really het you a green spotted egg? Might have to experiment with this
