The Olive-Egger thread!

I have an amazing Olive egger!! Billy layed her 1st egg ever today!!!

Very nice! What cross?

not sure how often she Hella Chicken gets in here, but she got these birds from me.
They are AM/BBS Marans cross. She sends me pic updates

Gorgeous! Is that from a first gen cross? What does the "BBS" stand for? I have Birchens. Also hear of the Black Coppers a lot. What is the key do you think to the dark olive? Are your AM's layers of very bright blue eggs, or your Marans very dark, both maybe?

that's the first generation. Mine that I kept haven't started laying yet. I was really happy with the pics she sent. I was surprised the olive was so dark . I thought I'd see that with 2nd generation. She didn't alter the picture either.
BBS is blue/black/splash. My breeder flock was laying quite dark. Even the splash.
This generation I'm getting dark and light layers :rolleyes:The brown egg in Hella Chickens pic is the first egg from her splash Marans she got from me as well.
So I'm happy my projects are going in the right directions. I did get a nice BCM boy to integrate into the mix :)

I'm looking to sell a few of my Olive Egger hens locally. They will be mature laying hens 5-6 months old. I plan on selling them after they start laying so I can see the color. So far it is a nice medium shade of olive. Anyone know about what they are worth? I've never sold them before. Are they worth any more than your feed store Rhode Island Red? I imagine it's tough to find local people who value them as I do! Any suggestions on where to try selling them besides in my small town. I need to sell them within CA I think depending on each states regulations. I know I can ship within CA. Anyone ever shipped mature chickens before? I hear it's very pricey.

Adult chickens need special boxes with filters in them. The box is kind of pricey and they need to be shipped overnight which can cost a bunch.

Pricing can be tricky and often feed costs getting up to laying age is kind of high. It might work better to not guarantee olive and sell them at 6 weeks old. A lot of people do not like brooding chicks.

Modesto Craig's list might work for selling them. Also, one of the chicken facebook pages in your area might have a buy sell trade section.

Thank you. Another reason I hesitate to sell them young is that I am not that good at determining the sex. I can't tell for sure until 4 months when their feathers are either rounded or V shaped on the saddle. I guess I could do straight run, but sooo many people don't want roo's. Do you have a good method for sexing that works at 6 weeks? I think I'm pretty accurate, but sometimes that Ameracauna mix in there can make it tough.
I thought about selling the eggs once I figure out what % lays olive and just letting people know. The brown ones are still a very pretty brown. Again w/ the roo's though!
