The Olive-Egger thread!

Can OE's be wing sexed? It's a BCM/EE mix

I wing sexed my 7 OE babies that hatched last week. From what I understand, you have to do it before 5 days old. If there are two uneven rows, then girl. One straight row is a boy. Out of 7 babies, I had 4 pullets and 3 roos. In my experience, the girls always sprout tail feathers first, too. So far, 3 of what I pegged as pullets, have sprouted their tail feathers. None of the roos. They are 8 days old. One pullet and one roo are Blue Marans over EE. 3 pullets and 2 roos are Blue Marans over OE, which makes these 5 f2.

Here are the OEs enjoying their food.

Thanks, your chicks are very pretty!

I am sure if I read through all 833 pages in this thread, I would find an answer to my question, but until I have time to do that, just let me ask: Will a Lavender Ameraucana Roo on a Welsummer hen produce an olive egger. I've got three of them, all hens :>) Thanks

Wow there is tons of info here! I have spent way too much time reading! Now I have to have olive eggs. I have a marans rooster and easter egger hens. If I put them in a breeding pen today how long do I have to wait until i can be sure that all the eggs are fertilized by that rooster? They are usually in a free range situation with many other hens and roosters, so there is no telling who they have been bred by recently.

Also, I have an easter egger roo and blue copper marans hens that lay very very dark eggs. Is it better to cross the ee roo and marans hens or marans roo and ee hens?

A hen can carry seman for up to 3 weeks, so it is best to wait at least that long before saving hatching eggs. I have saved eggs as soon as 10 days with good results, but I like to wait at least 25 days to make sure the eggs are definitely pure. I'm not sure about your second question, I would think you would have the same result both ways, but I have only done EEXMaran my self.

Better to go with EE hen if her eggs are blue, then you know you have a better chance to get olive(still only 50% tho)
