The Olive-Egger thread!

Yes and no.  Just because they are sold at Wheaten Ameraucanas doesn't necessarily mean whoever was breeding them was better or worse than whoever bred the EE's at making sure there wasn't a single bird that was homozygous for blue eggs in their breeding pen.  If you spend any time in the Ameraucana thread, you will note some people have issues with birds hatching with clean faces which shows not only the rooster has a single bearding gene but also at minimum one of the hens does as well.  That shouldn't happen in stock that is well selected and is 'pure bred'

I would put pretty good odds on your EE based OE on having the blue egg gene but as it has already been alluded to, you cannot be certain until they lay eggs.

I have chicks coming from Max Strong out of Texas, who seems to be a pretty serious breeder of Ameraucanas. I see his birds in the winning poultry shows.
The other source I have coming is from BYC's peachick. She seems to be well known for having really nice blue eggs. (Hatching eggs from her, fingers are crossed!) I'm very excited about getting my start with these wheaties!

Blue isbar/legbar/maran/frizzle mixes. I bet olive egg (legbar is blue egg/ blue isbar is mint-y green egg/maran dark brown and my frizzles have been dark green)

my green egg is hatching, below is the mom, the frizzle is the dad...

just hatched..

this is her, fluffed out, and the others that hatched as well..

they had different moms.

Ok my olive eggers are 8 weeks on Saturday. The night temps are in to upper 40s and into the 50s can these babies go out into their coop? I am so nervous. I have had people say yes put them out there, and people say its to cold at night. Their coop is ventilated but its an 8x12 shed. They will be protected from the elements. Thoughts please

Yes you can. My pullets go outside at 4 weeks in anything higher than 45 degrees. I don't think you will have any problems.

I wait for them to have feathered heads like 6-8 weeks. I have some 5 week olds that I'll waiting until the night temps are in the 50s or so before I throw them out.
