The Olive-Egger thread!

Yes, it does take certain breeds - But it all depends on what type of olive green you want. I've seen it done both ways in terms of who is the roo, who is the hen. Both seem to work. As for breeds - We all use blue to green egg layers crossed to dark egg layers because of the darkness adding the extra rich color, and the blue to green adding the product of olive green. Ever tried mixing green and brown paint?

Of course, you can also do it with normal brown egg layers too, they just won't be as (in my opinion) beautiful and desired. They'll be pale, and look a lot like an average EE egg.

Right now I'm hatching some Pink x (green?) eggs, so who knows what that will even make. . . Prolly something really pale and grey looking.

But, since the roo is the EE, I have no clue if his genes are more green, blue, or just plain brown.

Chic Chick,
What colors are your chicks? The solid black ones should all be pullets and the ones with a yellow spot on the head should be roos.
If they have the pea comb and solid black, you should have some olive egg layers there

So you can't breed a cuckoo rooster to solid hens for the sex links then? I guess I just lucked out without knowing. My marans are the cuckoo and the roosters were all solid that were with them. I may cross my BC maran rooster to my cuckoo maran hens a time or two before I rehome him.

Here is one of my future Olive Eggers.....Little Miss Maizy. I thought she would have ended up with the AM comb but she has a single comb like her daddy. She came from a nice blue egg. Wish you could see her fluffy cheeks better.
Hatched Jan. 19th. She is such a sweetie....very friendly. Her favorite place is on my shoulder.

Pretty girl!!
The talked around number for straight comb crosses laying olive eggs is a 3% chance..but pls post when she does lay cause that would be really helpful to people.
I think actual experience goes way farther than theory.
After two years and countless hatches I have only had one straight comb on the F1's and she lays an brown egg, dk as a Marans.
Thank goodness it was a girl bc the kids bonded to her right away, and named her "Chip" very inventive, I know, for an EE.
