The Olive-Egger thread!

Its been a while since i posted but I try to follow all that's going on. I have a lot of catching up to do after vacation.

Anyway I just got conformation on my Olive egger project. I sold hatching eggs to a friend and their pullet laid and its a beautiful olive green she said. I asked for a pic as mine is at POL but has not yet. This is from the pairing of Marty (FBCM) and my wheaton Ameraucana hen where all the offspring have been blue and beards and with muffs. Anyway she finally finished molt and is laying again so I will finally be able to hatch some more!

I'm curious, my son has a rooster who I guess would be considered an EE. I posted pics here before of his sister's eggs. They are both from a Buff Orpington hen crossed with an Ameraucana (Blue Eggs) rooster. The lady we bought them from showed me a very olive egg, but once here I noticed his sister's eggs are on the lighter side (more blueish). My son was supposed to separate them from my BO, but as most 13 year olds, he is a procrastinator. So his rooster has been free ranging with my hens. DH just bought me an incubator (YAY!!! Woohoo!!!) so I was going to order some eggs, but was curious......if I hatched out these eggs, I wonder what color eggs they would give me?

Has anyone crossed an Ameraucana to a BO, then back to a BO? Do you have pics of eggs you can share with me?

If the egg is blue or greenish, then you have at least a 50/50 chance of blue/green eggs in the next generation. If the roo is an EE then your chances are very good of more green eggers. Since BO's don't lay very dark eggs, and you aren't using Marans or Welusmmers, they won't be "olive eggs" per se, but can still be some nice EE's.

If you need some Olive Egger cockerels to darken up your egg color, just let me know!

Kathy, I've hatched several olive eggers that are solid black - they could easily pass for Ameraucanas, except for the light shank feathering. Here's one:

I'd love to keep her for an F2 olive egger, but I really am more interested in the blues. This black hen, though, lays XL eggs and is an awesome layer...so, it may be worth it just for that!

Wow Wynette! Except for the higher tail set (unless she's just standing that way), she does look really close to my black ameraucana's. And what a beautiful egg she lays!

Honstly I never looked that closely at her tail set; she's a good sized bird, though, which I like! The only pure Ameraucana I own is my Lil' Bit:

31 weeks and still not laying...sigh...she "should" lay a true blue egg; if she does, once she's laying well (assuming she ever decided to begin), she's going to the Marans pen for my next one to try for some F1 olive eggers to use for F2's next year! I love Lil' Bit - she's a sweetheart!

The tail set thing could just be because mine are still young. They are 11 weeks old, so not yet fully grown. I'll have to go out and snap a picture for you.
