The Olive-Egger thread!

Illia, I don't think you'd want this hen! Her eggs are so off-the-wall unpredictable in color, I really shouldn't even be hatching her eggs! But, it's so much fun to do cross breeds like this and not have to ALWAYS concentrate on making smart decisions, and SOP, and egg quality, with the purebreds! The olive eggers, for me, are just fun & easy!

AHC - the mauvy colored egg in my avatar was laid by a Marans hen. About 1 in 25 or so eggs she'd lay had this coating on it - when you run it under water, it turns dark brown, but dries to this mauve color.

I recently sold her, and will miss getting those neat eggs every now & then!

Trust me, I'd want her. . . I'd love to work on having some girls who lay funky eggs, and I'd especially love taking her to, say, a Welsummer for some amazing speckled, splochy, weird eggs. I know it is far from my usual "must be up to the SOP" type thoughts, but I also do love egg colors and patterns.

Kelly, any ideas regarding gender yet an the Wynette olive eggers? Are they too cute for words? I scanned this thread but I am too rummy to find anything.

Mary

I'm thinking I may cross some of my olive egger pullet from Wynette (assuming I have a pullet, I KNOW 1 is a rooster with 3 rows on his little pea comb) to my welsummer rooster and seeing if I can get a speckled olive egg. That would be so pretty!

Don't count the 3-row of peas chick as a girl just yet; I had one that I thought the same thing due to having 3 rows of peas, and it was a hen - my Sweetie, who is one of the blue hens I use for olive eggers. So, that chick might be her daughter!

Alice - me, too! Bring on the funky eggs!

Jenna, hatch date for them is 5/7. This is the hatch I'm the most excited about this year! My bator has been going nonstop for months now....hopefully, this will be my last hatch...at least for awhile.

Thanks for the hope!

I hope it's a girl!

I too would love to have a purple laying marans. I too love all the funky "unique" eggs and so would my customers.

Hello, my olive egger friends!

I'm excited to report that all 5 of the eggs I set of my 2nd generation "golden" olive egger girl bred to a blue ameraucana roo hatched. They are all adorable, but I'm disappointed to report that 4 of the 5 are black, and the 5th looks like it'll be brown like momma. I was SO hoping they'd be blue like their daddy! Sigh. Well, at least they are all happy, healthy, sturdy little ones. Now to just wait and see what I have! Pullets, please!!!!
