The Olive-Egger thread!

Thanks, guys!

I sorta needed the nice comments - when I collected the one that's got the half & half colors on it, I showed it to my DH and said, "This is absolutley the most interesting egg I've ever gotten!" and held it up...he was like....

Nice to have a place where I can show my weirdo eggs to folks who understand how fun the weirdo eggs are!

Well, if you decide that the purple egg laying Marans is just too weird for you, feel free to send her to me.

I'll give her and her weird eggs a great home!

Kelly, the Marans hen that laid those neat mauve-colored eggs has been sold. She just wasn't up to my standard for the breed pen, so a nice older couple is enjoying her eggs for eating now, along with some of her hatch mates!

newlyweds - this hen is in with my Silver Penciled Plymouth Rocks, and Chip is an awesome rooster with his....um....roosterly duties, so I'm sure her eggs are fertile, but it would be an UGLY cross to him, and he's a tan egg laying line of birds, so I'm sure the eggs would only be a light green from their offspring.

I do have 5 of her eggs, crossed to a Blue Ameraucana (that's from a green egg laying line) in my bator now. The thing I'm most worried about is that I have an awesome candler (it's an old projector, and that thing sees through walls), but I cannot see in those eggs for nothin'! They shells are SUPER DUPER thick. I can easily see into my darkest Marans eggs with the projector, but not these olive egger ones from my girl! I'm somewhat worried that the chicks will be able to hatch out of them!

Yeah that's something I alwayss wondered about with good olive eggers. . . I mean, not only is it that they have a brown coating and a green coating but also the dark "spray" coating.

I hope so, Kelly! Illia - green eggers aren't actually a coating, the color is actuall the shell color, all the way through. These eggs from my "Brownie" as I call her are, interestingly, green on the inside! It's just crazy!

Yeah, I just hope they hatch...like I said, I'm a bit worried about the chicks getting out of such hard shells, and I'm NOT a believer in helping hatchlings. Sigh....I'll know in 10 days, I guess!
