The Olive-Egger thread!

Happy chooks: Thank you. That is a good point about not knowing what color of egg gene I may be adding to the mix. He is a pretty little guy. He is all black and has a peacomb, beard and muffs and feathered legs. I don't think I will keep him then. I just have too many roos right now as it is and am trying to plan ahead a little lol. I am not 100% sure that he is a he but his comb is redding up a little and he is only a few mos at the most so I may wait a little longer to make sure.

No problem.

This is why I kept him:

An a pic of him when he was younger (ETA it shows his coloring and lacing better):

ooo I'm soo excited! Broody mommy keeps wanting to get off to take a little break though, but first they're kinda in lockdown, and second. . . It is cold outside.

And if you EVER want to get rid of him, I'll pay for box and shipping. I get girls that look like that but I'm not getting blue boys. Though I do have a young one right now that looks promising. I'm actually trying to work on my Olive Eggers as a sort of new breed (in my terminology). I'm trying to get blue birds, with muffs and feathered legs that lay very dark olive eggs. Only problem is that I've been breeding each generation oliver egg laying hen back to the pure BCM roos and the eggs are getting darker and darker and now kind of golden colored and then a new pullet laid this the other day right after I put her in the breeding pen. She came from an olive egg and her mama hatched from an olive egg and probably even her grandmama hatched from an olive egg. She laid the small egg on the right:

So now I've taken the pure BCM roos out of the pen and put two of my olive egg roos in there.

Ruth, I'll surely let you know if I do decide at some point to get rid of him.

I know you were looking for an olive egg, but that egg sure is gorgeous even though it's not olive.

Question for any/all - How many of you have had Olive Eggers from Marans that don't have feathered shanks? My first Olive Egger just hatched today, and it is a clean-faced black chick with clean shanks. I couldn't find any broken shells anywhere under the broody mom, but beside her was a crushed up bit of Marans egg shell with a yellow-tinted inside, indicating this is what the chick hatched from. So with the clean face, I'm thinking this chick is half Araucana. . . . But, how often really do half BC Marans offspring have clean shanks? I've never seen such.

Beautiful! Our olive eggers should start laying soon. They are 25 weeks now. My son checks the nests every day... he calls them army eggers... so cute!
